The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    5-18-09 Monday squat

    Squat
buffalo bar, 15" box 1" foam

    145x12
    145x10
    235x8
    235x5
    325x3
    325x3

    suit straps down
    415x1
    465x2
    525x2
    600x2

Squats where feeling heavy tonight, I was hoping to go 640ish, but stopped at 600. I've been consistently going heavy on squat night.

This next exercise is done with a safety squat bar and a deadlift bar inside a power rack. The SSB is in the rack set up to squat with and the deadlift is set up on the floor in the powerrack. You unrack the ssb and step back over the dl bar, set your feet to squat, squat down with your hands hanging down to deadlift the bar on the floor. So, your doing a ssb squat and deadlift at the same time. this is advanced exercise, if you try it please start with empty bars, in a rack with the safteys in place.

    5-19-09 Tuesday

1 hour deep tissue massage, pec and upper body.

I was sore the next day from this. The pec has a "rope" like knot that runs straight across the pec, from the insertion at center chest to the outside pec.

    5-20-09 Wednesday bench

    Flat bar
    45x 3 sets of 50

db flat bench / supinating wrists at top.
    20x50

db flat with mini band across back.
    20x40 ...wanted 50
    20x30 ...wanted 50

green reverse band seated shoulder pin presses
    135x8
    135x5
    225x5
    275x5
    315x5
    365x1
    365x1
    365x1

    db lateral raises
    20x12
    30x12
    30x12

    db tricep floor extentions
    40x12
    40x12
    50x12
    60x6
    60x6

Seems like it's getting better, my pec was sore from the deep tissue massage. I can still do shoulders heavy and tri's and get a good pump in the pecs so i'm hoping I don't loose much in terms of bench press strength when I return to normal benching.

I really think this will do me good, taking a break from the heavy benching and the high reps. My chest was sore, both pecs from all the reps. Sounds stupid, but 150 reps with the bar burns! and the db with bands kicked my butt, I couldn't do 3 sets of 50.

Where do you get the foam you squat on?

Have you given the SSB/deadlift exercise a name? Who invented it?

    Thank you.

I have a guy that does Mill work (custom wood work) they sometimes do restaurants, so they had some foam lying around from a job they did booths or chairs for. it is very soft 1" foam. I'm not really sure why I even use it! It basically takes the "hardness" out of our boxes. I do have denser foam we use sometimes.

I'm not sure who invented the movement, it wasn't me. They call it the mechanical ox. I believe someone has made a machine called that. This is a variation of that machine.

Here is a video of the machine.
    Video

and here is a video of someone random guy I found on youtube doing the movement at a gym. The difference is we do not use bands, and we walk out the weight, and we also pull from the floor.
    Video

    hope this helps.

Scott I will not be doing NAtionals. To be honest with you , Winning nationals isn't what it used to be. It's not worth the money and risk of really hurting this pec right now.

    What next?
I most likely will be sticking to money meets. Not that the money is what i'm after, just it is nice to know I may have a chance to win something to help pay my expenses. you know? Fit Expo 2010? It's funny, nationals their is no money and no competition, but the Fit expo, there are both.

Coming up with that you must really like to torture yourself.

fitexpo is top 3 in each weight class. I think you would need a full meet uspf total to get in on sat, for the money.

they do have bench deadlift on sunday that does not require qualifying numbers but does not have cash awards.

Buffalo bar 15" box 1" foam

chins off my smith machine which has a frame similar to a monlift. In other words it has square tubing, which makes you hold on with just your fingers like you were hanging from a ledge. I felt these sooo much in my lats. It takes the bicep out of the movement.

All my squats felt weak today. Especially my raw sets. I attribute it to mutiple things. Lack of food, lack of sleep, lack of liquids, extremely booked day of training clients, waking up at 5:30 am and squatting at 7pm. Oh, and the deep tissue massage the day before!

I tried to rack pull today too. First time since the pec injury. We went out of the straps, one 1" higher than the last time when I did 800.

    6-10-09 bench

No benching. I think for optimal recovery I need to let this pec just heal.

I've thought long and hard about how to go about this pec injury. I've had some very knowledgeable people I trust, put it into perspective for me. I don't have a meet anytime soon so why risk a reinjury by pushing it and not letting it fully heal? Just let it heal. If it tears completly my lifting career and life will change dramatically.

Good thoughts on the pec bro. Glad to hear you've got things in perspective.

When was the last time you took a week or two off of lifting?

    Sorry

Man, I haven't kept up with the log lately. I've been real busy, with life, the gym, training, personal training.

Thanks for all the get well wishes. It's been frustrating not being able to bench. But honestly, to answer Travis's question as to when was the last time I took a break from lifting,,,, well it's been a long time! Usually if we go on vacation I take that time off the gym, but with the new business we haven't had a real vacation in years.

Looking at the last year and a half,
Jan 08 Raw Unity meet FL - full raw meet
Feb 08 USPF American Cup CA - full single ply meet
June 08 USPF Nationals RI - full single ply meet
August 08 USPF Work's meet WV - bench / deadlift single ply
Jan 09 Raw Unity meet FL - full raw meet
April 09 USPF PA States PA - single ply deadlift only

I was scheduled to do USPF NAtionals July, and Worlds in Nov. before the pec injury.

It's been 6 weeks for the pec, I think it's going to take another 4 to be fully healed. I still feel it. And I keep doing stupid things with it, like deadlift and heavy overhead presses.

Monday I had a horrible squat workout but last night I smoked the 90's for seated shoulder presses, sets of 15 super easy. 65's for tri floor ext for set of 8.

This weekend I will be in York for the IPA meet. I have a guy in the 275's competing. We leave Friday night and I come back Sunday night.

Sorry for the long update, but thought it was needed.

    Ryan
