    training for a marathon

well its not really a marathon but its a several mile run for some charity organization.
does anyone know of some specific routines or training advice that would be beneficial?

I think learning to pace yourself, and not on a treadmill, will probably be the best thing to do.

I've always found it hard to pace myself when running outside or on a track.

Check out Active.com, kicksports.com, and runnersworld.com for some good training programs and tips. Just like with lifting, you need to be careful of overtraining and give yourself rest days to recover.

Also, if you're just getting into running or back into running, the adage "10 slow miles for every fast one" is a good one...just build up your aerobic base and get your joints and muscles used to the abuse by just plain running, increasing distance by no more than about 10% per week....best way to avoid injury and keep progressing

    Good luck!

...another great site for good training programs for any length race, from 5K to marathon, is www.halhigdon.com. Click on the "Training" button on the left side.
