The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Thursday 4/9 - Conditioning

    Hill Sprints
    40 yards x 5 hills

Well I must be out of my goddamn mind. Reading Wendler's log gave me the bright idea to do some hill sprints. I've gotten a lot bigger and stronger over this past year, but my conditioning and overall GPP has gone to hell. I feel out of shape, and I've noticed my overall training volume has been slowly decreasing.

Did some hill sprints at a local hill. Not sure how high or how long the sprint is, but I'm guessing around 40 yards (I could be way off). The first one felt great, the second was tough, and after the 4th I felt like puking and passing out. The fifth was just plain brutal and my lungs were on fire, legs felt good though. It took about an hour for me to recover and for my lungs to stop burning.

Here's a pic I took with my iPhone from the bottom of the hill. That's my buddy at the top waiting for me drinking Old Style.

Looks like more than 40 to me. I used to have a great hill at the back of my subdivision before they leveled it to build houses.

    Friday 4/10 - DE Squat

Box Squat (13" box, loose briefs)
    315 + 70lbs of chain x 2 x 10 sets

    Speed Deads
    365 + 70lbs of chain x 1 x 6 sets <--- alternating sumo & conventional

    45-Degree Back Raise w/ SSB
    65 x 10
    85 x 5
    85 x 5
    95 x 5

Done. Got myself a very loose pair of Metal Pro briefs for DE days and sumo deadlifting; they literally slide on in 10 seconds. There is minimal carryover, but I just wanted them for some hip protection and they seem to do the job.

Yeah it's probably more than 40, who knows. I probably shouldn't have started off on the steep side of the hill, who knew these would be so brutal.

Done. Started feeling a sore throat and sinus issues coming on yesterday, and this morning I think I officially have a sinus infection. I made a patented workout shake consisting of 12oz of coffee and 2 scoops of fruit punch Waxy Maize; tastes like crap, but got me through the workout.

**** dude, hope your not getting the same stuff I had. that infection nocked me on my ass, make some hot tea with honey and bourbon for your throat, really helps. Being sick actually turned out to be good for me, I got to rest up and think it did me good to get some recovery time in for my muscles.

Unfortunately it probably is. I had some tea with honey, lemon, and dark rum last night and I slept like a baby. Good thing the weather is finally starting to warm up around here, I'm done with these 30 degree temperature fluctuations in one day (probably contributed to me getting sick).

Thanks, I think I just tied my raw bench PR with my floor press today... that's always fun. This should be an indicator of some sort, but I have no idea.

My floor press is higher than my bench. My training partners tell me that it is because I don't use my legs like I should when I am benching.

My bench has always been a little bit higher than my floor press, but I'm probably like you b/c I don't feel I use enough leg drive. Even though my setup and arch has improved a lot this year, I still don't feel I'm utilizing leg drive enough (or at all) at times.

    Wednesday 4/15 - Deadlift/Upper Back Assistance

Rack Pulls (mid shin, plates 5" off ground)
    135 + 50lbs of chain x 5 <--- conv.
    225 + 50lbs of chain x 5 <--- sumo
    315 + 50lbs of chain x 5 <--- conv. (add loose briefs)
    405 + 50lbs of chain x 5 <--- conv.
    455 + 50lbs of chain x 3 <--- sumo
    500 + 50lbs of chain x 1 <--- sumo
    525 + 50lbs of chain x 1 <--- sumo

    Weighted Chins
    25lbs x 6 x 5 sets

    Mini Band Pull-aparts
    3 sets of 20

    Light Band Pushdowns
    100 reps

Done. First time doing rack pulls in a long time, probably over a year? Anyway, they suck and I suck at them. Next time I'll try doing them off blocks so I don't trash my pins and bar.

Goin' to the Cubs game today... oh yeah.

I also never really got much out of rack pulls. Have you tried reverse band deadlifts? These work much better for me. I still get the same CNS overload as with rack pulls, but I also start from the same position so I think I get better carryover.

No I haven't, but I will definitely give them a try. I like the idea of being in the same starting position as a regular deadlift.
