For you guys who can bench 405...

How long did it take you to go from benching 315 to 405 (raw that is)?

Little over 6 months for me. My training was all over the place when I first hit 315. Shortly after, I got to Westside and my training really took off.

1 year but I've had some injury setbacks that prolonged the process.

Wow, that's amazing. ( And some people actually question westside methods, LOL. ) Just curious, how long ago was that, and what's your current raw 1 rep max?

Its good to know even with injuries a year is possible. ( I can't believe I'm actually deciding on setting a goal to bench 405, before about a month ago 315 seemed unreachable. )

BTO - My best advice is to continually work on your form. Above all else, learning how to actually bench really helped me to increase the weight. Tuck your elbows and work on your arch, drive with your legs. In reading some of your other posts I think you are well on your way. Stay focused. I have my eyes on my lifetime goal now - 500lbs raw. I think it will take more than a year to hit this mark - I have 75 lbs to go.

Oh, ABSOLUTELY! That's why the 315 was SOOO easy last weekend, I finally got it ( tucking, arching, leg drive, etc ). I hope I can remember what I was doing, LOL.

Thanks, that's what this next goal is all about, staying focused.

My current gym best is around 525lbs.

I hit my first 405 I think it was the summer of 06.

After that I really focused on my shirted benching so my raw progress was just slower. Last August I quite shirted benching for a bit (I couldn't make it to Westside for awhile) and completely focused on my raw benching. I hit 455 in early september and then hit 500 in early January. By the end of February I was back at Westside getting my shirt work back in but I'd hit 515 by then.

We go one week in the shirts, one week raw. Lately I've been feeling very strong raw.

The biggest factor in how quickly your progress will be is the quality of your plan and how strictly you stick to it. I stuck to my plan religiously and it worked like a charm. I missed very few weights in the gym but constantly was hitting small PRs

What was your weight progression (body weight) from 315 to 405 if any? I'm assuming you put on a good bit of size as well?

Actually it was only about 10lbs difference. I was around 195 when I first hit 315 and was about 205 when I hit 405. I really had a difficult time putting on weight until a couple years ago.

it took me about 12 years with about 30lbs of weight increase, with 4 lifting injuries (two took a long time to come back from, two didnt take to log to come back from) and one motorcycle injury were it took a month to raise my arm shoulder height by its own power. also college and work full time slowed me down.
was about <150 at 315, then 180 @ 405 (both touch and go)

I got 315 at the beginning of June of this year and my current max is 380. I plan on getting 405 by the end of the year, if not sooner. I really started training my bench hard for 405 about the time that I got 315, so I've made pretty good progress. Up until June I was doing 5x5 stuff and didn't really ever do a 1 RM. So I might have been able to get 315 a little before then, but I never actually did it. I'll definitely be posting to brag when I get 405. I just did 370 for a double on Monday.

wow... you guys are crazy fast... I hit 315 about 4 years ago... but factor in the 4 years in the Army, bicepital tendonitis (x2), strained shoulder (x2)... it really slows it all down.
