The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Deadlifts for the first time yesterday

I did deads for the first time yesterday, and oh man did they feel great. I could feel it all troughout my back. I don't think I had the form perfect, but they still felt awesome. I am a believer in DEADLIFTS now. I'll be damned if I ever take them out of my routine.

to be honest, I don't know the difference. I did it with my feet about shoulder length apart, and my hands were outside my legs. I know this is cheating, but I did it with the rack that is supported. I don't know what it's called. It has a hook on the bar, so you can clip it to the sides. I really don't know how to explain it. People usually use this when they have no one to spot on bench and squats.

yeh, i know what you are talking about. That's definately cheating, but it's good to practice your form with, since you've never done them before. Sumo's are when your legs are spread wide and your hands are in between them. I prefer the regular ones, but they're both great.

No smith machine deadlifts allowed! Just use light weight and concentrate on form. Build from there. Good luck!

Thanks for the link. That actually gave me a real good idea of what it's supposed to look like. I think I'm going to use the Smith machine for the first month, or until i get comfortable with this exercise. Then I'll stand clear of the machine. : )

ive never tried deads with a smith (or anything for that matter), but i would think it would be very akward since the bar is stabilized.

How is it an odd looking deadlift? What's so different from the way it should be done? Do you really need to bend your knees that much?

this link states that the erectors are the prime movers?? i dont think that is correct.

anyways, just dont round your back, lift the bar, keep it close to your body, take it VERY light until you get used to it. get rid of the smith, use light weight, concentrate on form, dont worry about people looking at you deadlift the bar, they prob have no clue what a deadlift is!!!! good luck....

oh ya, im sure latty could give you some tips on deads

No point using the smith machine to learn a movement - thats what light weights are for...
You're not really deadlifiting until you just load up the bar and pull it off the ground.
