    Shoes while deadlifting

I did a quick search and couldn't find anything. So what kind of shoes should you wear when doing deadlifts? I didn't think it would matter but in a thread a while ago I read that some of you wear different shoes, other than basketball or running shoes say.

I take my shoes off for heavy deadlifts - stable footing, shorter range of motion, wonderful aroma.

Ok maybe I was kidding on the third part... but you either want to be barfoot (socks) or with something that has a flat sole like skateboarding shoes, chuck taylors, etc.

    I use chucks.

Although I have worn slippers and sandals at times.

Agreed, except today's skateboarding shoes do not fit the bill -- they have very soft heels.

Sandals are a great idea. I think I am going to start wearing sandals to the gym. I don't want to go with socks only or barefooted because the floors are freakin gross at my gym.

I didn't walk into the gym in my socks... I wear regular cross trainers even for my warmups and then once I start pulling heavier, over 400 lbs then I take off my shoes.

Most gyms will not allow you to train if you walk in the door wearing sandals.

Currently, I wear a pair of old style Van's (pretty much like chucks minus the ankle support) because they're completely flat soled and thin. However, I think the sole is finally starting to get a tiny bit of compression wear and I don't much care for the lack of ankle support. I ordered a pair of Do-wins that I might try DLing with, we'll see what the heel is like.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm going to assume you would also advise wearing those kind of shoes from the start correct? Even though I"m not pulling a lot of weight yet.

I used to wear the deadlift slippers 20 years ago and just recently switched to wrestling shoes...better traction.

I personally like weightlifting shoes for deadlifting. They get my hips over the barbell more and extend my pull ~1.5 inches.

I bought some low-cut converse all stars today, and I could really tell the difference between having a flat sole and lifting in tennis shoes.
