The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Top Raw Benchers Currently

Gunny Green, how many people have done over 500 raw OFFICIALLY at such a light weight.

Hoornstra over 600 at 242, routinely over 600.

I don't know of many lightweights, someone help me out?

Great thing about a contest raw lift, is there is little debate. No questions like WAS IT ONE PLY? DENIM OR POLY? HIS LOCKOUT WAS UNEVEN? JUDGING WAS CRAPPY? You see very little bashing of a contest raw lift. Lots of people talk alot about what they can do, few show it. Gunny proves it in the gym and on the platform, raw.

Many have learned how to master a bench shirt, few have the raw strength of the greats in the past.

As a side note, if Kenelley trained for a raw meet I know the record would fall. I have seen him do near 600 in the warmup room for REPS easy.

Wbb's Nick Winters has to be considered. I totally agree about Hoornstra. I will have to think about some others.

Hoornstra, of course, although nothing has been heard from him in a while...
Gunny Green and Ryan Celli have both done over 500, Green at 220 and Celli at 198...
Will Lynch benching high 400s at 181 routinely...
Dennis Cieri benching ~520 at 198.
Rock Lewis benching 600 at 229...
There are many others... Nick Winters and John Dolan for the SHWs, both well over 600.
The lighter guys (165 and down), I am not so sure about.

anyone who benches over 600 raw is amazing.

i still have yet to see a 600 raw bench. seen a few attempts, but they were never good.

there is a gymrat in my gym who has benched 600+. the form was sloppy and it wouldn't have passed in a meet. he used no leg drive, it was actually pretty amazing. i haven't seen him in forever, but he doesn't powerlift, he lifts for the hell of it.

I think I remember Tank Abbot doing 600 or close to it and I think it was raw from what I remember. It was during one of the older ufcs around 7-8 range.

Hoornstra and nick winters will be at the Arnold Classic in the Animal cage benching over 600 again this year. Hoornstra hit 635 aqnd took a stab at 675 stalling just over halfway up.

Everyone listed-- Ryan Celli and Will Lynch top lighter guys. You got joe luther doin 420 and joe mazza doin 440 both at 165.

Big Ben Graves just hit 615 this weekend at 308. He has worked with Josh Bryant for a few years, who himself is a big 600 plus bencher.

****, Andy bolton has hit 600 raw.

Ive seen Frenkle blast 495 in the IPA Pro warmup room before getting in the shirt to break the 198 record of 760... he is doin 820+ now!

George Halbert is a machine! Nick Winters makes 650 look effortless! I've never seen Wolfey max out raw but I have seen him rep 500 for 9 or 10 reps.

Keep an eye out for George. He's been just focusing on his raw strength completely for the time being.

Nick Winters is definitely one of the top contenders

Ryan Celli is probably one of the best lightweights currently

Ryan Kennelly certainly could take the raw record, but until he does I'd have to tip my hat to Mendelson on that.

Good posts guys! I am more interested in who has put anything up within the past year, like a top list for CURRENT guys. We all know Kenelly etc can put up huge numbers, but I want CONTEST numbers from the past calendar year, just for arguements sake to keep everyone on spot, including me lol.

    best current raw benchers

Based solely on official contest lifts I would say:

    Currently:

    Jeremy Hoornstra...615# @ 242# and 650# @ 275# (260#)
    Rock Lewis....600# @ 242# (600# @ 229# and 241#)
Cieri and Celli both over 500# @ 198#
    Nick Winters...650# @ SHY
    Mendy...701# @ 308# and 715# @ SHY
    John Dolan...628# @ SHY

    All Time:

Mike MacDonald...522# @ 181#, 562# @ 198#, 582# @ 220#, and 603# @ 242# (240#....MacDonald also did 609# at only 232# in a meet but lost the lift officially due to a rule infraction since changed...it would have counted under the current rules...it nipped the upright just before full lockout)
    Rick Weil...485# @ 165# and 551# @ 181#
    Ted Arcidi...650# @ 275# and 666# @ SHY (285#)
James Henderson...711# @ SHY (at least 5 700# lifts officially done)
    Mike Bridges...529# @ 181# (plus was a more than 2100# total simultaneously)
Jim Williams 675# @ SHY (elbow wraps, near miss @ 700#, at least 650# officially without elbow wraps), Pat Casey (first to 600#, 615# and 617# officially @ SHY), and Bill Kazmaier (661# @ SHY, 600# for 5 reps at a time when only about 10 men could do it for a single) get some props as well because they were all ahead of their time. Larry Pacifico is often over looked but was a great raw bencher (530# @ 198#, 567# @ 220, and 590# @ 242#) with a big total. Mel Henessy and Ronnie Ray were also brute raw power in their time.

I'd love to see what George Halbert and Mike Siegler could due officially as 242#ers raw. Siegler's training lifts are rediculous with perfect form (see his 605# double on youtube). I have seen Halbert's 625# touch'n go bench on the Westside video...impressive, but based solely on the video, a paused 600# likely would have been tough. Both these guys seem to have the potential for big raw numbers.

I know that quite a few of these lifters are nursing some injuries. Does anyone know when Nick Winters, Jeremy Hoornstra, and Rock Lewis plan on competing again?
