    The Squat Appreciation Thread

    The Squat appericiation thread!

Way down this road, in a gym far away, A young man was once heard to say, "I've repped high and I've repped low, No matter what I do, my legs won't grow" He tried leg extensions, leg curls, and leg presses too Trying to cheat, these sissy workouts he'd do. From the corner of the gym where the BIG men train, Through a cloud of chalk and the midst of pain Where the big iron rides high and threatens lives, Where the noise is made with big forty-fives, A deep voice bellowed as he wrapped his knees, A very big man with legs like trees. Laughing as he snatched another plate from the stack Chalking his hands and monstrous back, said, "Boy, stop lying and don't say you've forgotten, The trouble with you is you ain't been SQUATTIN'." DALE CLARK, 1983

F*** squats. They are for girls. I'd rather do wrist curls.

If you can make it to the toilet bowl without pain then you aren't pushing enough weight.

Wrist curls are more fun to do anyway.

I hated them at first, but now they're pretty much my favorite. They gave me stretch marks on my thighs and ass, so cheers to them.

I've got to say concentric good mornings with a safety squat bar is right up there, IMHO.

The full squat is a perfectly natural position for the leg to occupy. That's why there's a joint in the middle of it, and why humans have been occupying this position, both unloaded and loaded, for millions of years. Much longer, in fact, than quasi-intellectual morons have been telling us that it's "bad" for the knees.

Few things are graven in stone, except that you have to squat or you're a pussy.

From stumptuous.com, the Gospel of Sq'waht:

3:1 And thus spake Sq'waht to Her followers: "Standeth thou straight, and taketh upon thy shoulders the bar of iron, 5 cubits in length. Let not thy spine droop 'neath its burden; rather secure thy back like the mighty walls of Jericho."

3:2 "Then must thou drop thy ass to the floor, keeping knees behind toes as summer follows behind spring in the natural order. Let not thy weight shift onto your toes, for along that path walks the ever-present companion Laws Of Physicks, and She is a bitch goddess who tippeth her subjects forward and contriveth to rip their kneecaps from their sockets."

3:3 "As the tallest building is necessarily driven into a solid foundation, so should thy heels drive into the floor so that thou may ascend heavenward. To assist thy upward travel, gaze also heavenward in contemplation of the Glory of Sq'waht. Alloweth not thy knees to drift inward like the twin sisters Scylla and Charybdis who unite for the destruction of seafarers."

3:4 "If thou doeth all these things, thou will be richly rewarded, for Mine is the Kingdom of To-Die-For Legs."

When I first started coming to this site I'd save and print off articles or posts which really struck me as being useful. Here's one of them:

"Taking the difficult shot" by Keith Wassung

I'd also recommend reading the rest of his posts. They're not all about squatting but they are all just as inspirational. Its a shame he stopped posting here.

Good link. Just read through a few of Keith's other articles and they were great. Seems like that guy had the best intentions for the sport. Thanks.

Yeah, he really seemed to know the score. Rereading some of these articles has made me determined to do some 20rep squats after Christmas.
