The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

How much gear REALLY adds to the total

I posted this in back of some thread on the bb forum, so i wnated to put it up front so people can see what is really going on behind the geared numbers.

    2447/ 226 geared up in comp- 10.82
    1900/ 225 estimated belt only total- 8.44

thought i would edit and put actual numbers just for comparisons sake cause i know i wonder what people get out of gear sometimes.

    geared- 1108/ 639/ 700 (have pulled 750 tho)
    raw belt only- 740/ 450-475 paused/ 700

so about 600 pounds on my total from my Titan gear. dont know how that compares to others, but i would say its on par with most others on the 'pro' circuit give or take. Some of the bench guys are liable to get more, but then may not get as much from squat suit... so i dont know. ild say its fairly representative. maybe that can put some perspective on things for guys who have never used gear and are curious.

to put something in perspective tho, Donnie's recent 2905 total would be around a raw 2300! A few years ago (2006) at a raw meet Donnie hit 2170 (nearly a 2255) and his geared total has gone up alot since then, and i assume his raw strength the same.

    raw: 805 (855 missed on depth!)/ 565 (600 miss at lockout)/ 800 DL = 2170 (near 2255)

    geared:1235/ 910/ 760= 2905

so difference of 700 pounds based on old raw numbers. I dont know what his total was in 2006, somewhere around 2600 tho?

Sorry if this is a dumbass question (I don't use gear), but why is his deadlift 40 pounds more when he lifted raw vs geared?

i dont know if this answers your question but some people pull better raw then with gear on. for example, recently at the WPC worlds a lifter was having a hard time with his first and second attempt DL and on his third he took his suit off and put on a singlet smoked 777lb like it was 225lbs on the bar.

Sam you are strong as hell with or without gear.

i haven't benched enough in my shirt to tell how much i get from it, but you can always make tweaks to give you a few more pounds (that goes for raw lifting too)

i am still fighting with squat gear, but i'm starting to get somewhere with it

deadlift gear, i dont get too much from it...but i know a couple guys who get 100 lbs. one uses a boss suit with predator briefs, and one uses a king sumo suit with ace briefs.

my guess is because it was done last. Squatting in gear takes so much out of you (400 extra pounds lol) that he probably was more taxed going into the lift then than he was when raw.

Plus he pulled or tore somethign in his leg during the squat in that meet if I am not mistaken, so there were other factors other than the gear affecting the lift.

if u are talking about Donnie Thompson, he has pulled 832 raw. he hurt an adducter at the recent meet which is why he 'only' pulled 760.

if u are referring to me, i pull conv raw and sumo geared. i cant get into a good raw sumo position, but with a suit i can sit right into it and get in a beeter starting position so i can pull more

Wow its a big variance between people. Keep in mind we should go by what PERCENTAGE it adds. For instance for a 2200 total 30 percent would be 660 pounds, for a 1000 total it would be 300 for example. Byrdman is strong either way, and his raw strength is world class, so I am unsure if he is the BEST example. I know of several people that get over 300lbs just out of a bench shirt for instance. With the squat, several people are getting 40-50 percent as well. If you take Donnies 2250 approx total raw vs 2900, there is a 650lbs difference give or take a couple, so he is getting a 29 percent approx gain WITH the gear, he is so strong raw and has proven it on stage. I think Byrd is in the right area, 20-30 percent gain for the TOTAL in geared meets, but many are getting more and I think most advanced lifters, with time and patience could get AT LEAST 20 percent gain in the total. The DL gets the least boost from gear without question. Good post.

It also comes down to the type of equipment (single/multi), experience etc etc.

Currently I'm still lifting RAW(belt only) with an aim to get into single ply equipment early next year (I lift in IPF), once I've hit some numbers in the equipment I'll post em up on this thread to see how much the numbers change overtime and experience in equipment.

    My starting numbers are;
    Squat - 562
    Bench - 341
    Dead - 584

Uh, OK. How do you pull and what type of gear have you used?

There are crtainly guys that get 30% + out of their gear but I think that 20-30% number is about right on, maybe its more like 25 - 35% for multiply.

    1900 (700 / 475 / 725) Multi-Ply
    1500 (500 / 360 / 640) estimated raw total

I think I can get about another 100 lbs out of my gear right now just tweaking the bench shirt setup, and fixing some issues with my squat without improving those raw numbers.
