The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Who's going to enter his first meet in 2009 ?

I will at the end of March for some WPC affiliate federation, a qualifier for WPC Europe and WPC Worlds even if I don't go there with qualification on my mind, just to get a first total and go from there.

Anyone else? post the numbers you're looking to hit if you have already an idea. Also I'd really like the big names here to drop some knowledge and give us advices for a first competition.

I'm hoping to make it to the USPF Texas Championships in Austin. My goal is a 1000lb total and hit all 9 lifts. I'm nervous just thinking about it.

Your openers should be a weight that you can do at least three times. It's not how you start, but how you finish.

    10 COMPETITION BP TIPS

    1. Your last heavy bench press workout should be 7-10 days before your next bp competition.

    2. Use no more than 80% max because if you do a Max Single within a week to 10 days of the Meet, you can automatically take 5% to 7% off that amount for your max on meet day.

    3. 1-3 weeks before a bench press meet you can't get that much stronger, but you sure can get a lot weaker.

    4. Ice your elbows 2-3 times before your bench press competition.

    5. Your bp will suffer the most when you loose wt. You can plan on losing about 3 lbs from your bp per lb. of bwt lost AFTER the first 3 lbs of lost bwt. The lighter you are the more dramatic the effects.

    6. Increase protein intake to increase recuperation.

    7. Get a lot more sleep/rest.

    8. Visualize the meet and your attempts.

    9. Go over your meet equipment check list.

    10. Have fun.

Thanks JT. I'm getting my first bench shirt soon, inzer. what do you think of the extra high performance HD blast shirt? I may go raw for my bench this year and just spend the year practicing with the shirt. right now I'm just benching my bodyweight and have a goal of focusing more on my bench training this year.

Have fun and listen to all the vets. You would be suprised at how much advice you will gain, if you are open and receptive to it.
Have a buddy/training partner help handle and spot you, preferrably someone with meet experience. You have to give you next attempt pretty much immediately after you are done, so having someone help remind you and gague speed on lifts, hand off, help with equipment is a HUGE help.
Plus they can be kind of long so they can help pass the time and keep an eye on how far your you are in your flight as to the timing of your warm ups.

Speaking of which, bring a cooler with food. Hopefully you know what your body can handle before/during/after lifting, becuase you will definately need something if it is a full power or at least 2 events long.

A change of clothes for afterwards if you have a long drive and/or are sharing the car with someone is nice too.

OK here's a complete rookie question but what kind of time separates each attempt ?

As for me I'll enter the 198-class and I hope to go in the low 500's for my squat opener. No idea yet for the BP and the deadlift. I need to get in the shirt to know where I stand. First try on Tuesday.
