    Please comment on missed deadlift

    Below is a video of me deadlifting 500 pounds. I don't think I could have been closer to getting it but still miss it, lol. When I was trying to lock it out, I felt like I was falling backward causing me to drop the weight. Any comments regarding this lift will be appreciated ( please don't suggest that I pull conventional, I do train conventional as well ).

    It looks like you hitched it and then the weight just dropped you back down. Be a little more patient and grind it out. A couple of seconds of just staying with it and you would have had that. Work on pullthrus or dimel deads and learn how to fire your glutes at the top of the lift, that will help an awful lot.

    BTO,

    You smoked the first part of that lift.To mean it simply looked like a balance type issue as you got closer to the top(lockout).
    You have got lots more potential in your deadlifts.
    Way to keep working,your doing a great job.
    I wouldn't be surpirsed if you hit 600#'s in 2009 on your deads.

    dude you have got to get your ass down and use your gear. you aren't getting much out of that suit at all the way you are pulling.

    you have no arch in your back whatsoever. i'm impressed you can pull 500 that way, LOL

    stay erect and grab the bar. keep your upper back arched, and focusing on pulling back.

    you have some long ass arms just like i do that are a huge advantage for deadlifting. you don't even have to use your back hardly at all. if you stay erect and keep your upper back arched while you pull you basically just turn it into a leg press. you keep your back straight and you can pull a hell of a lot more.

    as for the hitching issue, it very well can be an upper back weakness. if this is so, try some DB rows.

    more time under heavy weight and teaching yourself to strain without hitching will clear this up as well.

    your upper back is extremely rounded. you have to get your head up when you pull and the rest of your body wil follow your head.your first thought off the floor should be "head up"

    I was just thinking the same thing OX. You looked hunched over throughout the lift. Keep your head up and drive the weight straight up. I think you fell back because you're going too hard back trying to get leverage, rather than up. I used to do the same thing, I would look too much for leverage instead of trusting my back to handle the weight.

    I got the 500 tonight. It's still far from perfect, but I think my technique is slightly better than the other video, correct me if I'm wrong. I came really close to getting 515, but my body was done after the 500 ( which I did a few times, working on technique. )

    Your stance looks a bit narrow to me. When I sumo deadlifted. I was about an inch from the plates and I'm only 5'8". It's interesting that the hardest part of the lift for you is locking it out. From what I remember about sumo deadlifting the hardest part was breaking the ground. If I broke the ground with it, it was as good as lifted.

    Much better than the first, but it still looks like your ass/hips are rising too soon. I would just reinforce keeping your chest up and arching your back hard.

    Great lift, Ox. That second video looked EASY. I had the same trouble you had with sumo. I was going for 450 and pulled it 7-8 times to lockout but could not lock it out no matter what. I had to go back to conventional lol got it easy. from the second video it looks like you have 525 in you.

    Yep - I was thinking the same thing. Get your hips down and widen your stance and I think you'll be moving up even faster...

    Yeah dude, your form is pretty bad, but it got better.

    1. It's EXACTLY like a box squat.
    2. Your back is not arched.
    3. Widen your stance like Vincent said.
    4. Do some kind of Power Squat or wide stance Box Squat to help strengthen your legs.
    5. Stop the ME work and do some rep work to perfect form. If you keep pulling heavy you'll just reinforce bad form.
    6. If it comes off the ground it should be locked out.

    I would also say to widen your stance. it is too close for your height.

    Thanks everybody, I appreciate the feedback. I'm working on widening my stance, my hip flexibility currently is pretty bad, but I'm working it and its slowly getting better.

    a wider stance bothers your hips even in gear? that's odd

    try driving your hips down right before you go, that helps me get into a good position before i pull. just like vogelpohl does it:

    see how he straightens out his legs, then drives them back down under him and pulls it back right away? try that. don't hesitate, i always find the less time i spend down by the bar the better

    Lenny while that works for you I think you have to take into account he's 6'8" and needs to be a little wider not to be bunched up.

    great lifting,,i would widen your grip on your left hand just a tad. u are closing yourself off thus not allowing you to get your hips through properly ,by moving your left hand out a little this should open things up and increase your lockout power..God Bless
