The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Gabe: I could, but he charges for a workout plan separate from the diet. Not in the budget right now.

    Chest/Back:

    DB Bench: 105*7, 95*12, 85*10
->my ipod slide under my shoulder during the first set. I was falling off the bench, so had to stop before I tore my shoulder.

    Incline Smith: 190*10, 8, 5
->heavier and more reps than last week.

    Cable Flyes: 8*9->7*5
    ->just a quick burnout

    Rack Pulls: 435*10, 365*12
->thought I would suck on these, but surprising strength

    Rack Pullups: 85*12, 8

    Cable Rows: 100*20
    ->burnout

Notes: So I was thinking of using the split from WBB3. Chest/Back, Legs, Arms/Shoulders. After this workout I decided it's not smart to do chest and back together like this. Gotta keep thinking about it...

Halfway thru with Shelby. Few new pictures I just sent him.

    And thats my split.

    Day 1 upper back/chest/calves
    Day 2 Lower Back/Hams/quads
    Day 3 Shoulders arms/calves
    Day 4 off

Rinse and repeat. Low volume high intensity training. Me like the results very much thus far.

Terry: Thanks man. Totally happy so far!
Dunn: Thanks. Lots to learn here. Read up around the forum!
Stump: I'll trade some of my lean for some of your strength! Just keep your body hairn
Risk: Thanks dude. Little by little I'm filling out.

    Legs:
    Leg Press Calf Raise: 2ps+35ps*10

    RLDL: 290*12, 8

    Squats: 225*9, 185*10

Leg Extension: 110*17, 2 more sets I didn't write down...

    Shoulders/Arms:
    DB Shoulder Press: 75*10, 80*10, 85*8, 70*13
->wasn't sure where to start here. There was a bunch of guys doing the same exercise and kept looking at me because I was using almost twice their weight.

    Lat Raise: 30*12, 12, 12->bunch of partials

    Cybex Preacher: 110*8, 100*6, 80*8

    Hammers: 40*12, 12, 8

    Dips: 90*10, 115*6, 90*7, 70*15
->again drawing a lot of stairs. The dip station is over by the cardio and stretching area, so number of girls were checking it out

Notes: Went out for a few beers last night, then dinner at Centrico (Aaron Sanchez's from Food Networks place). Food was awesome. Got grilled chicken and white rice. The bottle of wine and beer killed my diet though. Had a bit of a hang over today. Almost puked up my first few shakes. Supposed to go back out tonight for drinks for someone's bday...too much boozing going on.

    Chest/Back
    DB Bench: 105*8, 95*11, 80*17
->pretty good strength. Someone was using the 85s, so I grabbed the 80s, obviously too light.

    Incline Smith: 195*11/7/6

    Rack Pulls: 455*5, 405*10

    Rack Chins: 90*9, 6

    Legs:
    Leg Press Calf Raise: 2+35*8
->less reps than last time. Was too tired

    Squats: 245*2/5/5
->playing around. Form sucks. See videos.

    Leg Press: 4pps*30

    GMs: 45*10, 65*10, 95*8

    Leg Extensions: 110*20/12/8

Couple new pictures I emailed Shelby.

    Video

Notes: Weight is steady, and actually down a bunch today. Shelby upped my calories again. I think I'm around 3800 to 3900 calories now. My body is just burning them up. I uploaded my squat vid (working on getting the rack deads on here). Sorry it's sideways, no idea how all this stuff works. Any tips are much appreciated. It's been a long time since I squatted regularly. I am basically relearning from scratch. I felt like I was going deep, but you can see I'm high. From my view I am leaning way too far forward.

Damn was trying to upload my rack pulls, but got my rack pullups instead. Oh well. That vid made me realize I need to get up higher off the ground so I can get a better stretch at the bottom.

You already mentioned how to improve the rack chins. Get a bit more straight up and down as well and you will be golden.

I can see what you were saying about the squat form, although it might not be as bad as you think.

You are really leaning over forward a ton. How has your glute and ham work been?

My guess would be that is where the weakness is really getting you.

Just really focus on sitting back and pushing your chest up.

One thing I have been doing is a number of my sets close stance, and then the rest of them wide stance. This might be a beneficial idea for you as a bodybuilder, allowing you to hit your quads well and then move on to the hammies and hips after that. Just a thought

Couple of things on the squats:
turn your feet out more (I looks like lack of groin flexibility and this'll make it easier)
point your toes up so that you sit more on your heels
push your knees out or open your groin up (try to get your knees to push outside of your feet)

It looks like you're sitting straight down and pushing the knees forward instead of out. This is killing your ROM because when the knees don't open up the hips can't descend and so you're leaning forward to try and compensate to hit depth.

Have you ever sumo deadlifted? Think of squatting in the same fashion but without the wide stance. Weight on the heels, back arched, belly full of air and chest up. Keep your toes pointed up and push those knees out until you feel a stretch in the groin.

You're strong, it's just a technique issue and you could easily be squatting 315 or 365 for easy reps.

    Cocoa: Thanks man.

    Joey: Thanks. Working on it.

Travis: Thanks for the tips. I've been using RLDL and GMs more. Hoping to work on the hips and glutes strength. I normally do squat with a more narrow stance, but I want to learn how to do a good deep full squat. I should know how to by now!

Will: Really appreciate it. All I did for deads was sumos for years. They have always been much better and stronger than my squats. I took all your tips and worked on them tonight. Dropped the weight a bit and really focused on the form.

    Legs:

    Standing Calf: 255*8

    Squats: 225*4, 4, 4, 4

    Leg Press: 4pps*26

    Smith GM: 65*10, 95*10, 135*10

Notes: I've missed posting the last couple of workouts. Been crazy. Had two midterms last night (bombed both I think...). Went home last weekend to study. Got a training session in at Bev Francis with Unholy. He made me feel fat and small at the same time. At least I could out dip him! Haha.

Shelby has made massive changes this week in response to the scale not moving the past 3 weeks.

No doubt, the V-taper is becoming more pronounced, and the quad development has really come along bigtime.

Not trying to point out any flaws here, I'd just like to see more trap work in the mix to round things out.

Cocoa: Nitpick away dude. I know traps could use some work. Maybe I will start adding some work. I stopped shrugs because of my lower back. Maybe some rear shoulder work will help.
