The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Strongman Comp Tips

As I mentioned in my journal, I am gonna do a strongman comp for my school (Purdue). It is open only to students and divided up in weight classes so I might have a chance to do pretty well. Anyway I was just looking for some training tips for anyone that has done any strongman type event or training.

    The events are as follows:

    Boilermaker special pull
    - basically a truck pull

    Purdue "P" carry
    - I'm guessing we carry a big "P" a certain distance

Hammer hold- no idea what this is

    Tire flip

    Farmer's walk

I have access to tires and a sled. I'll probably fill some 5 gallon buckets with cement for the farmer's walk or carry some heavy db's.

So basically what type of training should I do, what type of shoes/clothes should I wear, and any other tips are appreciated.

Dude, I wish I could help. That sounds awesome though. You might talk to Gable here on the boards, he knows his stuff.

Get some heavy sandbags - go to the army surplus store and grab a couple army duffle bags. Shouldn't be any more than 15-20 per bag. Then go to home depot/lowes and grab 6-8 sand tubes liek the ones you put in the bck of a truck. Put the tubes in the duffle bags and youve got implements you can carry, shoulder, do farmers walks with, etc. Plus they are cheap!

Load up the sled and drag it, or get a rope and pull your car. Get a friend to ride and work the brakes. If it's too easy, click the e brake down a couple notches.

The hammer hold is most likely an implement held at arms length for time in each hand. You can do this with dumbells in the gym. Good luck with everything!

Thanks ben, some good tips, I'll actually go do that duffel bag thing for sure.

You're right about the hammer hold as well. It is two sledge hammers held out to the side at arms length. I'm guessing 15 or so lbs.

I'm gonna start tyin a rope around my friends jeep and pulling that for practice.

Where in Chicago are you? I know a few strongmen up there and you might be able to work with some implements (tire / farmers) prior to the event - would give you a distinct advantage over someone who never touched the equipment.

    Tom

I live about a half hour from the city when I'm home but I'm at college right now (Purdue) so I'm in central Indiana. My workout partner is on the rugby team there and so I have access to tires and sleds. If this goes well I would love to train with some more experienced people though. I'll send you a PM when I get back home. Thanks man!

This is the new information I have about the event.

    Boilermaker special pull

That is our mascot and what we will be pulling. There might be a rope to assist, they don't know yet. 100 foot course.

    Tire flip
Forgot to ask the weight of the tire, They didn't know the distance of the course when I asked.

    Concrete "P" carry
Apparently this weighs about 120 lbs. 100 foot course.

    Sledge Hammer hold
I was told each hammer was 10lbs or less.

    Farmer's walk
Apparently we are using 150lb dumbbells for this, which is exactly what I was training with.

Yes, are you not familiar with the Purdue Boilermakers? We are a BigTen school.

    Did some tire flips today

I have no idea how much this tire weighs, if anyone has an idea I'd appreciate some input. It's a Firestone tire.

    Here's a couple pics:

    Some info on the tire
