The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Tom Mutaffis - South Atlantic Strongman Challenge 2009 Write-Up

Going into this contest I felt pretty good about the events but was also a bit neverous with the move and knowing that there would be a field of tough, experienced competitors. Weighed in on Friday at 231.4 with clothes, jacket, and shoes on. Hung out and had some pizza with a couple of the Columbia Strongman guys and then headed hom to rest. Was 226 on my scale when I got home. Woke up early Saturday to drive down, weather was pretty cold probably in the high 30's.

Arrived at the contest site and got to catch up with a few people who I haven't seen in a while and set up shop on the sidelines. Went through some warmups and was feeling OK on everything. We had 14 competitors in the 231's and about another 10 in the 200's for a very large LW division.

Press Medley - 215 Axle, 245 lbs log, 250 lbs axle, 265 lbs log.
First two implements facing one direction and the other two at a 90 degree angle. My rehband belt flew off on the second implement, probably because I am so skinny. Had a little bobble on the axle clean but still managed a good time of 28 seconds for all for implements. 1st place.

Chain Drag - 600+ Anchor Chain up a 100' hill, rough surface.
I had the advantage of going last on this event bug saw some great distances posted. This thing is brutal and was having trouble holding on to the chain, had to put down and re-grip a couple of times. Managed to get a little over 38 feet which was good enough for 4th place. This moved me back to 3rd place, two points behind the leader.

Car Deadlift - About 500 lbs in hand, side handle and pretty low pick (12-14")
Knew going into this event that I should be able to post a pretty good number. The reps to beat was 12 but there will still some great deadlifters going after me. Had a disaster with my straps and they kept on pulling off the bar. Ended up having to re-strap 3 times and it cost me two reps but still managed 19 repetitions. Tied for 1st.

Yoke Race - 715 lbs for 100 feet slightly uphill
Had a little bit of a wobble on the start but kept a good pace and finished the course in just over 25 seconds without a put down. 1st place, and also beat all of the 265 lbs competitors on this event. This put me into a tie for 1st place overall.

    Keg Carry & Load Medley - 175, 225, 225 to 52" & 250, 250, 275 to 50" (standing)
The kegs were staggered from the platform starting at 18 feet away and each one two feet closer. A couple of the other competitors loaded all six kegs and the other two gentlemen in contention posted great times. Ran through the kegs and one-motioned all of them to the standing position on the platform to save time. Finished in just over 35 seconds which gave me the event win by about 7 seconds. 1st place.

Atlas Stone Over Bar for Reps - 290 lbs stone over 48" bar
Needed 7 to maintain my 1st place standing in the overall. Had good tacky and the first two reps were easy. On the third rep I bobbled the stone and it rolled backwards off of the bar, quickly tried to re-group and grabbed the stone but was about 2 feet from the bar... walked with the stone in the air and dumped it over then quickly loaded another 4 more reps. Not sure how much time was left on the clock but raised my arms in exitement. Tied for 1st place in the event.

Took home 1st place overall! Won the 231 lbs class, and the LW Division.

A huge thanks to AtLarge Nutrition for all of the great supplements that helped me to prepare for this event and take my training to the next level.

Next contest will be the Fatbacks Strongman Team Challenge on March 14th in Roanoke, Virginia.

Thanks guys! I am very pleased with the result as it was a battle all day long, am also very sore right now. Almost had to wrap my knees and chalk up just to get out of bed this morning.

Have video of at least one of the events as well as a bunch of pictures that I will post later this week.

This was a regional contest, Platinum level.

I am not going to be doing the Orlando Platinum Plus (Pro/Am) - am not interested in the Pro Card right now and the timing is not good for me. Might compete out in San Diego at the HW Platinum Plus this summer but that one would just be for fun.

Probably going to do Nationals again this year and make a run at another national title.

Great write up. Great job. Way to finish off strong despite a little adversity with the stone. That's the sign of a true champion.
