Back from the dr today, tells me my sore elbow is severe lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)...he thinks it's from heavy lifting. He's told me to lay off lifting for a few weeks or go "20% heavy"...what is that??
Trying to think of exercises I can do in the meantime that will not put such a strain on my elbow...any suggestions?
proabably 20% of the weight you're using now.
Have you tried one of those "tennis elbow" braces that can be found at the food store, target, walmart, pharmacy, etc. ?
Some people have said that those do help quite a bit.
You might also want to look into some elbow sleeves to help give some compression and keep the joint warm. I used APT sleeves for my upper body training www.prowriststraps.com
Not sure if this is relevant or not but I was getting pain in both of my elbows a few weeks back. Switched from a 5x5 to a 3x5 (3 sets of 5, I can never remember which officially comes first) routine and the pain is darn near gone.
Proper warmup is also important when talking about your joints. This should include some type of brief cardiovascular warmup along with stretching, light movements, and for some people additional support equipment or training aids (sleeves, braces, biofreeze, etc.)
+1 on both of Tom's posts.

A couple weeks? Should clear up in a few days. Still, take it a bit easy, building up the weight to strengthen the area.
