From Mark Rippetoe at Starting Strength

Here is the tried-and-true injury rehab method for muscle-belly injuries we got from Starr and that has worked for years better than any other method I've ever used. It also works well on orthopeadic injuries in general, and should be tried before anything more elaborate is used. Wait 3-4 days until the pain starts to "blur",which indicates that the immediate process of healing has stopped the bleeding and has started to repair the tissue. Then use an exercise that directly works the injury, i.e. that makes it hurt, in this case the squat. Use the empty bar and do 3 sets of 25 with perfect form, allowing yourself NO favoring the injured side. If it's ready to rehab you will know by the pain: if the pain increases during the set, it's not ready, if it stays the same or feels a little better toward the end of the set, it is ready to work.

The NEXT DAY do it again, and add a small amount of weight, like 45 x 25 x 2 , 55 x 25. Next day, 45 x 25, 55 x 25, 65 x 25. Continue adding weight every day, increasing as much as you can tolerate each workout. It will hurt, and it's supposed to hurt, but you should be able to tell the difference between rehab pain and re-injury. If you can't, you will figure it out soon enough. This method works by flushing blood through the injury while forcing the tissue to reorganize in its normal pattern of contractile architecture.

After 10 days of 25s, go up in weight and down in reps to 15s, then to 10s, and finally to fives. During this time do NO OTHER HEAVY WORK, so that your resources can focus on the injury. You should be fixed in about 2 weeks, squatting more than you hurt yourself with.

This method has the advantage of preventing scar formation in the muscle belly, since the muscle is forced to heal in the context of work and normal contraction, using the movement pattern it normally uses. The important points are 1.) perfect form with 2.) light weights that can be handled for high reps, 3.) every day for two weeks, and 4.) no other heavy work that will interfere with the system-wide processes of healing the tear.

It is also very important through the whole process of healing the injury that ice be used, during the initial phase after the injury and after the workouts. Use it 20 on/20 off, many times a day at first and then tapering off to morning, after the workout, and before bed. Ice is your best friend in a muscle belly injury, holding down inflammation and fluid accumulation ("swelling") while at the same time increasing beneficial blood flow through the injury. But DO NOT USE ICE MORE THAN 20 MINUTES AT A TIME. More than that can cause more damage than it repairs.

Hope you don't mind me popping in. I've been checking out your journal for a while now. Awesome work btw. An internet diagnosis would not be fair for me to do. Besides, I'm not a doctor just another lifter with back problems. I used this method after I good morning'ed a heavy squat. If you want to give it a try and it doesn't violate any of your doctors orders I would highly recommend it. When you are hurting and incapacitated this rehab program is really tough, and it's done every day.

I wish you a speedy recovery and hope this can get you back on track.

John- Thank you so much for posting this. It sounds like a great rehab program. I also appreciate you stopping in and checking things out in my log. I will definately try to incorporate this in my rehab if I can.

*Today I was able to get to my feet without really hurting anything and can get around slowly with a cane. Good news considering I dont need a ride to the ER now. I got a NEW Chiropractor who seems to be really good and is not bugging me about heavy lifting. I told him this is the way it is, this is what I do, and I just want a solution not an opinion. I think he got the message. I havent got to his office yet. This has all been done over the phone. But Ive known him for a long time. Tomorrow Im going to visit him and hes going to refer me to a back specialist for an MRI. We'll see what happens after that. Thank you so much to everyone for your support.

Definitely get the MRI and see what's going on in there. I have no doubt that you'll come back stronger from this. It's only a small bump in the road. In the meantime, you're gonna have to accessorize around that pimp cane of yours...

Thanks Flynny! I dont think ill sneeze ever again lol

Got to the Chiro today and am able to walk around for the most part. Didnt get the MRI yet, but he said its 99% that its a bulging disk. Hes pretty impressed that im recovering as fast as I am since it was pretty severe, so thats promising. Maybe a few more days of rest and ice/heat and I can start some rehab work.

Suscks to hear about your back man. Good luck with that healing up. How long do bulging disks usually take to heal?

Thanks Nick. They never really heal. Unless you op for surgery which is out of the question. Just have to rehab and make sure its properly warmed up before hitting anything heavy.

Update- Today feels much better after I got going in the morning. Im rotating heat/ice and doing a lot of stretching. Good news is that Ive bee able to use a broom handle and mimick squats and sumo pulls without any pain, so that has me feeling pretty confident that ill be back at it soon. The problem will be arching while benching. That will take some time. Ive got DBs at home with up to 60lbs a piece, so I am going to do some floor exercises such as DB floor presses, DB flyes, and lying DB Tri ext just to get some blood flowing. Also, some BW squatting. Im really getting antsy to get back at it. Hopefully soon....

Just caught up on your journal from the past week, bro. Sounds like you were in a lot of pain. Glad to hear it's getting better. When is the MRI? I hope you don't have any bulging discs. I like your attitude though and know that you are great motivation. Glad you told the chiro that this is who you are and what you do. I have the same attitude towards powerlifting. Take it slow and keep recovering, bro. It will get better and you'll be behind the bar again soon. Can't believe you were using a cane to walk around, that really sucks. When will you find out more?

Thanks guys for the kind words and support. Ive really been at it and hitting some rehab exercises and a lot of inversion threrapy and I feel really good. The mornings take a bit to get going from being stiff, but nothing too bad. The chiro said I should hold off on the MRI, which doesnt make sense to me, so I just may get it done anyway just so I know whats up. I figure Monday Ill start back at the gym and take it slowly. Squatting shouldnt be too bad, but im not sure about pulling yet. Ill take it as it goes. Im just glad to be able to get back.
I called Titan again and they apparently are still waiting on a shipment of Boss material. Its been 7 dam weeks now.... Dont know how such a company has to wait this long for their material. Especially for their top selling material. Hurry the F up!

I was just wondering because he usually has just about everything in stock. It does suck because I'm probably going to need a new pair of briefs once I get back in gear.
