    My first meet

So I wanna to try a meet out for the 1st time. I want to compete in the 242 raw class but still have some weight to drop Im at 266 right now. I chose to try out the IPA - 12th Power Challenge Meet on October 10 2009. Next week is my last week of my current routine and will start 5/3/1 after. Can any give me some good advice on getting ready for a comp. I really dont have anyone to guide me or help out with this. Would 5/3/1 be a good training program to get ready. I was also wondering how strict is the judging in the IPA? Any help will be great!

Your best bet would be to find a semi-local or local gym with some powerlifters who you can train with.

The 5/3/1 program is great for slow & steady consistent gains and has worked well for a lot of powerlifters.

5/3/1 has worked well for me and plenty other. Nice steady raw gains. Also check out some of Matt Rhodes and other articles over at elitefts. Theres a few articles about preppng for meets too.

I agree with finding other powerlifters to train with. I've seen a ton of people miss lifts and/or bomb at their first meet. They either don't listen for commands or had no idea what squat depth is.

I say...do it and when you get close like maybe 8-12 weeks out try to find a babysitter and take some trips up to Albany Strength , thats why you go to Golds Right?

If its your first meet I would not recommend cutting weight (water weight that is... if your goal is to drop some fat between now and then, then by all means...). In your first meet you're going to have to worry about openers, what to eat, waking up early, form, signals, warming up, etc... You dont' want to add the exhaustion of cutting weight before hand, especially if you're not really sure how it will effect your body.
