    Poundstonee wins Giants Live

at Mohegan Sun. Derek won 5 of 6 events. He was crazy dominant. I think he can rival Marius' record. Also, there were three Americans on the podium. Looks like Americans want the WSM back.

I had a great time hanging out with our crew there. We had Capt Rhodes with the lovely Libby. Brian the "ankle taper" with his much more attractive better half, Jessica. Big Kenny with a new squeeze, Angie. Last but not least was DD and Josh. Draw whatever conclusion from that you'd like.

Thats really cool! Sounds like you guys had a great time.

Derek Poundstone is one of the most entertaining athletes to watch IMO.

Very impressive person to say the least

From the write-up's that have been posted it sounded like he was dominant, and the point spread also reflected that.

In the end Derek finished with a 7.5 point lead over Travis Ortmayer, with Brian Shaw and Louis Phillipe-Jean both tied for 3rd at 39 points - with only 8 competitors total including seasoned veterans and well known international guys like Mark Felix, Misha, and Terry Hollands.

There should be some videos online soon - if I seen any good ones I will link them in this thread.

How many of you, who went, thought that stone was going to fall on that competitors head? Don't remember who the athletes were who were doing the stones when this happened! I thought it was going to fall on him for sure if the referee didn't run over there from stopping it from falling.

It was good to see you Jeff. It was Brian Shaw who grabbed his stone from killing Jean Phillipe somehting or other.

I thought it might of been Brian Shaw but couldn't think of the other person. I'm sooooo grad it didn't fall on him, I could only imagine the amount of damage that could of been done.

My first WSM show, about 3 years ago, a stone rolled off the back of the platform and broke. They had to duck tape it back together for the other competitors to use.

And Shaw got rewarded by having his load of the 475 stone DQ'd on time.

Something I've always wondered though - why is it that these strongman always muscle the weight up vs. more of a power clean? Obviously their not going to pull a full, ATG olympic clean at a strongman event, but I scarcely see so much as a power clean with these sorts of things, usually they're more like a continental. Couldn't he clean more weight that way? Is it because the bar is a thickbar or something?

Misha Koklyaev did for his first couple. The axle is just so thick and the weight is so much that no dice.

Yeah, you are not going to power clean that axle unless you have ridiculously strong grip strength. Most guys continental it up like Poundstone did.

That was a COOL video! Very impressive!

The only guy who I have seen power clean (not squat clean) a heavy axle with ease was Zydrunas back in the 2006 IFSA worlds where he cleaned and pressed a 340 lbs axle for 7 reps in one minute, clean each rep. Some of them looked like a reverse grip power curl.

Not only is grip strength and hand size a factor but the axle in many cases is also a non-revolving bar. This makes it very difficult to clean because it almost fights you through the motion.

Derek's strength at this point is outrageous. He is really pushing the limits of his body and is currently about 330 lbs under 10% bodyfat at only around 5'11height. Travis Ortmayer has competed for the past 3-4 weeks all over the world with extensive travel and could probably challenge Derek had this been something that he was training directly for. Those two are on a whole different level than many of the other competitors though.

Misha was not mentally focused as I believe he just became a father, as his strength levels are definitely world class as well.

The guys who will be on the podium or at the top of the upcoming contests are this group:

    Derek Poundstone
    Travis Ortmayer
    Zydrunas Savickas
    Misha Koklayev
    Andrus Murmets
    Ervin Katona (torn biceps recently)

The next big event will be Fortisimus, this one is an extremely heavy contest and should be a great battle.
