The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Questions About A MIXED Grip..

I was wondering about using a mixed grip for deadlifts or rack pulls or any kind of deadlift type of movement. I was curious would one side of my traps become more developed than another using one hand over and one hand underhand? I am just wondering because I am only doing ONE set of rack pulls once a week for my traps. Opinions?

You are doing them or your traps?

They will hit your traps, but if you just want to hit your traps, do db shrugs.

I get very accustomed to using the same hand over and the same hand under when I do my deads. I haven't messed up my back or it's development, so I personally see nothing wrong with it.

It would be a good idea to change the mix though.
I have read that it can cause some imbalance.
Better to be safe than sorry, I guess.

You don't need to switch your grip. Think of it this way, do you see the biggest powerlifters going around with mismatched traps (any more than normal)?

I know at least that with myself, due to a shoulder injury, my right shoulder varies dramatically in height if I rotate my arm between grips. As it will tend to fall underhand, I like to force it to go overhand sometimes even though it is not as comfortable.

Maybe they practice with both combinations of mixed grips?

I would vote to alternate grips or even better to stick with an overhand grip. You probably don't remember but some time ago I sustained a slight--but annoying--injury to my lower back(One of only 2-3 I've had in 3 years of training), and am certain it was due to the torque caused by using a mixed grip in the rack deadlift.

We tend to think of Sisyphus as a tragic hero, condemned by the gods to shoulder his rock sweatily up the mountain, and again up the mountain, forever. The truth is that Sisyphus is in love with the rock. He cherishes every roughness and every ounce of it. He talks to it, sings to it. It has become the mysterious Other. He even dreams of it as he sleepwalks upward. Life is unimaginable without it, looming always above him like a huge gray moon. He doesnít realize that at any moment he is permitted to step aside, let the rock hurtle to the bottom, and go home.

Just use straps with an overhand grip and don't worry about it. :P

Chances are ya wont mess anything up doing a over under grip. I've done left hand under right over since i started deads and everything is pretty much symetrical. And chris is right that most p'lifters dont swithc there grip in training.

Gotta second the left hand under, right hand over grip. I don't know why, but it just feels so much more natural that way (I'm right handed, btw, if that means anything).

Okay guys thanks - Ill probably use what feels best. Pulling lots of weight without straps is a damn good forearm/grip workout too.

As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. Thanks B&I good read. Very interesting opinions. I think I am just going to stick with alternating each week or doing 3 reps with one way mixed, then altnerate for my next 3 reps. This gives my body a few second break and really helps everything even out I think.

    Dammit, where's Cobra?

As far as the grip, I've always used the mixed grip and I've yet to see a problem. I even use it on SLDL's and shrugs before I got straps.

You used a mixed grip on shrugs!? Damn I never heard that that was a good idea, I must be crazy but personally I can imagine that causing a muscular imbalance. Maybe not who knows. I dont know the physiology standpoint, sorry.

Sure did. Never had a problem with development either.

Though I must say its nicer to be a strap-bitch and crank out reps with 425.
