At my gym, the area in which there is a decent rack for the overhead press with a barbell is placed (conveniently) right by the door where there really is not much room (if any). I could potentially stand in the rack while doing overhead barbell presses, but there is ample room a ways back. Thus, I'm curious if using dumbbells in lieu of barbells for the overhead press is a decent substitute. The main problem I can see is hoisting the dumbbells up to shoulder level... not necessarily a problem, but it draws energy away from the lift itself and could potentially lead to shoulder injury.

Any thoughts?
