I have been under the iron wolf bar before and that was solid for what I squat. I am fine with the bars we had at the gym. So far I think the Texas Power bar sucks. It is thinner and I can't find a good place for it on my back with squats. It moves in my hand as I press. It was ok for deadlifting, but I don't even like training with a deadlift bar. Again, I feel when training for reps it sucks. Whatever though, I'll adjust.

    3/15/11
Hamstrings really tight today. Had trouble recruiting them in the latter deadlift sets. Those were pretty much all upper and some lower back. Still got everything in. The struggle with the deadlifts was trying to maintain form during the set more than anything else.

    Squat
    Bar x 8, 5
    95 x 5

    155 x 5
    210 x 5
270 x 5 x 2. Actually got comfortable with the bar on my last set, mid set. That is ok with these light weights, but trying to get your bar placement right mid set on a heavy set of 5 isn't really optimal.

    Incline
    Bar x 5

    100 x 5
    125 x 5
    155 x 5
    180 x 5

    Deads
    135 x 5

    240 x 5
    310 x 5
    375 x 5
440 x 5. Not the prettiest, but got it in. Straps for this set as we will continue that trend for now.

    Decline Sit ups

    BW x 12 x 3. 5 count negative

    15 minutes stretching.

Again not the best, but still got work in.

It's a multi-purpose bar. They sell it on elitefts.

It could be because your not use to it yet. I'm sure if you keep using it more then you'll start to like it. You'd probably like the mastadon bar, it's 1 3/8" thick.

Nice deads...you are on your way back. I like the idea of using straps to protect your bicep. Good call there.

I agree with you Brian. It'll get there I am sure. Mike and John thanks for the support. I am almost a strong 165'er right now.

Mobility, tennis ball rolling, and stretching. 25 minutes total. I need to get more consistent with this stuff on off days. 25 minutes to feel better seems like a no brainer.

You and me both, I feel like I do good with it for a couple days or so and then I stop for months at a time. This kind of work and ab's are things I really need to focus on.

Brian, I am starting to like this bar. Really focused on getting tight tonight. Let the weight settle in before starting the rep is key.

    3/17/11

    Squat
    Bar x 8, 5
    95 x 5

    155 x 5
    210 x 5
    270 x 5
    325 x 5
    395 x 3
    270 x 8

Beltless on all sets. Good form and pretty smooth reps

    Bench
    Bar x 5

    85 x 5
    115 x 5
    150 x 5
    180 x 5
    220 x 5
150 x 8. For this set I ditched the paused reps and turned it into pretty much a speed set. Felt good.

    Rows

    80 x 5
    105 x 5
    135 x 5
    165 x 5
    200 x 5
    135 x 8

    Dips

    + 20 lbs x 6 x 2

    BB Curls

    60 x 8, 6, 6

    BB Extensions

    90 x 8, 6, 6

    15 minutes stretching

John, not sure. I am going to do it up until the Sunday before the 4/17 meet, take it easy, and lift that day. The next week will be light lifting, as 4/23-4/30 is vacation and a cruise. When I resume 5/1 will probably drop back some and run the 5x5 into the ground. Then make a transition when needed.

    3/21

Rolled for about 45 minutes. Solid work. Hit a nice armbar during a scramble. Worked a lot of sweeping. Buddy has been on a makeshift schedule with this, as they have a newborn baby boy. Introduced him to my tennis ball roller. Did a bit of that and stretching as well.

    3/22

    Squat
    Bar x 8 5
    95 x 5

    160 x 5
    215 x 5
275 x 5 x 2. Here are videos of these sets. First set with a front view, second with a side. I would like to improve a few things. Wish I could get my elbows more under the bar, but also like the current shelf I make with that position. Also notice a bit of rounding at the bottom. Have to sit back a tad more. But being relatively skinny with long and thin bones, this form works well for me. I'm not some noob who can't squat 300 to depth and haven't ever really hurt myself squatting, so still like where I am at.

    Video

    Video

    Incline
    Bar x 5

    100 x 5
    135 x 5
    160 x 5
    185 x 5

    Deads
    135 x 5

    250 x 5
    315 x 5
    385 x 5

    Video

450 x 5. No straps. Beltless. Squatting 3 times a week definitely affects this set, but not bad.

    Decline Situps
BW x 15(5 sec neg), 12(5 sec neg), 20(rep out)

    15 minutes stretching.

It was good to get those squats on videos and see what I need to work on. Today went with a little higher bar placement and brought the hands in. Feels better, and can keep the elbows under the bar now. Now though I need to find a solid unrack with this set up. Thats what makes this so fun though, always trying to improve.

I'll be in checking out your progress. I just got done doing the IPA Lexen meet a few weeks ago myself. Maybe we'll run into each other at a meet sometime, since I'm from PA as well.

John, I'll probably just keep running with this one. It fits my style. Byron, thanks for stopping by. I will certainly check out your journal as well. Where are you at in PA? I live right outside of Hershey. Not sure if our paths will cross, as I will more than likely only be doing 2 more IPA meets. This one next month and the raw nationals in August. Training partner wants to go USAPL and will probably make the move with him. I don't see a reason to do any other feds for now though since I have IPA dues paid until September.

Guys, in general this is what I was talking about with my squat. This is an old video I believe I posted when I first did it. Anyway, I like the bar placement here, as well as the overall feel of this form. This is probably when I was at my strongest too. Granted, the form breaks down as the set goes on, but I had done several heavy sets prior to this, including a double with 500. Not sure exactly when I moved my hands out more, or the bar lower, but working now to get back to this. This is 315 for 17. Believe I had down 405 for 3 beltless, 455 for 1 with a belt, 500 for 2 with belt and wraps, and 405 with a belt for 5 prior to this set. I was one of those workouts you always remember.
