The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Quick workout in the garage this morning. Planning on training events tomorrow but I missed my lower body workout Thursday/Friday so wanted to find some middle ground in terms of getting in a session without beating myself up.

    Deadlift: (against bands)

    315 lbs + Mini Bands x 2
    405 lbs + Mini Bands x 2
    455 lbs + Mini Bands x 2
    505 lbs + Mini Bands x 2

Not sure on the band tension but was happy with the pulls.

I picked up a new blender a week or two ago and have been mixing up some different shake combinations. My PWO shake today was 4-5 frozen strawberries, half a banana, three scoops of Opticen, scoop of glutamine (got it for free), scoop of BCAA's, and about 10-12 oz of skim milk.... delicious.

Thanks Nick, I think that the bands added around 100# at the top but I had no way of calculating the exact amount.

Hope your training is going well.

Trained out in my garage and driveway, it was raining but I decided to do some moving events anyway. Hopefully my plates won't rust too much from getting soaked today.

    Front Squat:

    245 lbs x 2
    295 lbs x 2
    345 lbs x 2
    400 lbs x 4

    Yoke:

    485 lbs x 50'
    485 lbs x 50'

    Farmers - Yoke Medley:

    240 lbs/hand & 665 lbs x 50' each
    240 lbs/hand & 665 lbs x 50' each

Wore knee wraps for the front squats on the 400# set and all reps were fairly easy, had a couple more in the tank but I bounced off one of the pins on the 4th rep and decided to stop there. The medleys went alright considering they were up/down hill and in the rain (both sets were around 25 seconds).

Trained at the corporate fitness center with one of my colleagues. Diet was solid today but was feeling a bit tired from the weekend and waking up early. Body weight has been steady in the low 220's.

    Incline Bench:

    310 lbs x 7 (PR)
    240 lbs x 12

    DB Press:

    80's x 15 x 2 sets

Close Grip Bench / Overhead EZ Bar Extensions:

    155 + Doubled Mini's x 2 / 60 lbs x 10
    155 + Doubled Mini's x 2 / 60 lbs x 10
    155 + Doubled Mini's x 2 / 60 lbs x 10
    155 + Doubled Mini's x 2 / 60 lbs x 10

DB Military Press / Side Raises:

    70's x 10 / 35's x 20
    70's x 10 / 35's, 30's, 25's, 20's, 15's, 10's, 5's x 5 reps each

    Rope Push-downs / Push-Up's:

    75 lbs x 25 reps / BW x 10 reps - Two rounds with minimal rest.

Very pleased with this session, my training partner also hit a pretty big PR on his incline. The last two super-sets were brutal but fun.

Good work on the PR. I am a big fan of the rep PR work and your posts on them. I feel too many people just focus on the one lift max and to me that misses the point when training for something like Highland Games, or in your case Strongman. Keep up the strong motivation for the rest of us!!

Thank you, and I agree that the gym is well-equipped enough to get a good workout.

I agree, as you have noticed I do not go for 1RM lifts very often but instead will push for rep PR's of various sorts (number of reps with a weight, amount of weight for given number of reps, and number of total sets with a given weight x reps).

Trained in the garage after work, have been feeling alright but still need to get my diet dialed in.

    Jump Rope:

    50 reps x 5 sets

    Pulldown:

    90 x 10, 110 x 10, 140 x 10, 160 x 10 (short rest periods)

    Pull-Up's:

    BW x 3
    BW + 25 lbs x 3
    BW + 40 lbs x 5 x 5 sets

    Power Rows:

    225 lbs x 4
    275 lbs x 4
    305 lbs x 6 + 2 + 2 + 2 (rest-pause)

    Inverted Row / High Pulls:

    BW x 10 / 135 lbs x 5 - 3 rounds with no rest.

Good quick workout, kept a fast pace and was pleased with the pull-up's and rows.

Trained at Elite Fitness, did not have any training partners with me but wanted to get in a mix of lower body and some event work.

    Deadlift:

Worked up to 575 lbs x 3, stopped with a couple of reps in the tank.

    Farmers Race:

    220 lbs / hand x 40'
    290 lbs / hand x 75'
    290 lbs / hand x 80'

    Standing Calf Raises:

    2 Plates x 15, 20
    4 Plates x 10, 10

    Leg Extensions / Leg Curls:

    150 lbs x 10 / 100 lbs x 10 - 3 sets each with minimal rest

This was the first time that I have done a relatively heavy set of farmers and then come back on the second set to beat the distance, which is a huge milestone for me. I have not done direct calves work in a long time and my calves were destroyed when I woke up Sunday morning.

Was not feeling great today, a little bit exhausted from the weekend and my diet was a bit off as well. Body weight has been steady in the mid 220's.

Trained after work in my garage with a co-worker, we decided to do some board press so we cut a board in half with a dremel tool (didn't have a good saw) and then duct taped it together...

Board Press / Incline Bench: (Super Set - Used a two board)

    275 lbs x 4 / 40's x 8
    315 lbs x 4 / 80's x 8
    325 lbs x 4 / 80's x 8
    335 lbs x 4 / 80's x 8
    345 lbs x 6 / 80's x 12

    Pec Fly Super Set: (Incline/Flat)

    40's x 10 & 10 x 3 Sets

Side Raises / Overhead Triceps Extensions:

    25's x 15 / Bands x 20
    25's x 15 / Bands x 20
    25's x 15 / Bands x 20

    Push-Up's:

    BW x 25

Worked up a good sweat today. Have not done board presses, floor presses, or any other sort of similar work in quite some time and I felt them in my shoulder.

My calves are still crushed from the couple of sets that I did on Saturday... guess I really need to start training them more regularly since I really did not even do anything too exciting in terms of weights/volume.

    No pulldowns?

Seriously good work. I'll echo Terry about the farmers walk. That's quite beast. And congrats on jimmy rigging a 2 board together.

Trained out in the garage tonight, have been feeling a bit beat up but that could be due to working some long hours in the office and insufficient diet. Decided to go with a volume workout tonight...

    Pulldowns:

    90 lbs x 18,18,18,12,12,12 (90 reps)

Pull-Up's / Wide Grip Upright Rows:

    Pull-Up's = BW x 8,8,8,4,4,4,4,6,8,6 (60 reps)
    Upright Rows = 135 lbs x 4,4,4,2,2,2,2,2,4,4 (30 reps)

    Inverted Rows:

    BW x 10,5,5,5,5 (30 reps)

    Fat Gripz V-Bar Rows:

    100 lbs x 10,10,10 (30 reps)

    Hammer Curls:

    40's x 6,6,6,6,6 (30 reps)

All sets were done with minimal rest, good conditioning.

Trained with my friend Brandon in my garage, decided to go for a PR front squat today. Diet was on target today and I was able to rest for a bit before training so was feeling pretty good. Body weight in the mid 220's.

    Front Squats:

    225 lbs x 3
    275 lbs x 3
    315 lbs x 3
    385 lbs x 1
    445 lbs x 1
    510 lbs x 1 - PR!

    Tractor Tire Drag:

    Tire x 30 seconds x 5 sets (30 seconds rest between sets)

    Planks:

    BW x 30 seconds
    BW + 45 lbs x 30 seconds
    BW + 70 lbs x 30 seconds
    BW + 100 lbs x 30 seconds
    BW + 125 lbs x 30 seconds

Very happy with the front squat PR! Has been 10-11 months since setting my previous mark on them. Have never really done planks before so I was shaking quite a bit even on the initial set, and the sets with 100 lbs and 125 lbs were tough. Overall definitely a good session.
