The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

I don't like either. Buy free weights "IF" you have the room. It hate those things. But if iI "HAD" to choose, I would pick the one with more sh*t!! Just go to a gym...pay the yearly fee. Those things suck!!!!

Man those things make my skin crawl!!

I must say I am a gym goer as well, for a plethora of reasons. I think you ought to talk to some of the people here that work out exclusively at home, try to get some emails and whatnot before you put down that much money for equipment.

Free weights are always useful, however.

I was very happy with my Bowflex for about a year, but I have gradually made the switch over to free weights. I would stronly recommend that you buy free weights with a bench setup that allows rows, chins, and dips. If you absolutely must buy a machine, I can guarantee you that the Bowflex will be at least as good as, and probably better than, either of those two choices. Money may be a consideration, though.

The third, unshown picture that is just a big rack of dumbells with a bench.

Machines make my left ball ache.

Even little Budiak can max out some of the weight stacks on these machines. Come on man, get serious.

Get freeweights. Your huge, pulsing muscles will thank you later.

I agree, a power rack, an adjustable bench and a plate set with a bb and some db's will be far better then a machine.

I got one of the Gold's Gym, cheapie things 4 or 5 years ago for Christmas. I think it was like 150 bucks. All just BW stuff unless you add a belt with some plates or whatever, but it is set up for the following...

pull-ups, wide grip, medium, and close grip
    dips
    pushups

It's really pretty cool and not too expensive, IMO.

Full power rack $275 and up, lets you bench, squat, deadlift, pullups safetly by yourself.

Olympic weightset $100-150, thats 300lbs of weight. Get some additional olympic dumbell handles and a few more 5 and 10lb discs.

Adjustable utility bench for rack $100-150. You can even get one with a leg extension. Just make sure there aren't any uprights on the bench, they get on the way.

You can do a ton of effective exercises with this equipment and surprisingly it won't require any more space than those machins you posted. I have a setup like this in the corner of my basement and love it.

Do you have any saw horses at your house? I do dips off of these, very stable, work great.

May I also recommend, in addition to some of the free weight suggestions listed above, that a piece of cheap equipment you might like to invest in is a Chin and dip bar setup, usually with a leg raise seat built into the dips part. Obviously therefore you wil want a weight belt too.
