    I'll be doing the meet in Newark in 2 week Vinny. Full power. Depending on how the bench goes there I'm thinking about staying raw and making a run at 600. I know its a short list and I'd like to be on it.

    I'll be there for a bit on that day. Hopefully I can see your bench depending on how quickly the meet goes. I will say this, you'll have a much better shot at 600 down the road switching to a yoke or giant camber bar for squatting.

    Yeah, I was certain that would be one thing you were going to mention. My shoulder flexibility is actually very good for a guy my size, but I can see where it Yoke or Cambered bar would save the wear and tear. I'm really interested in how you go there. What sacrifices you made, what work you added in or dropped, and the difficulty going from 550 to 600. I feel absolutely confident I can do this if I put my mind to it, my struggle is whether I want to give up everything else (at least for now) to accomplish this.

    50 & 100lb Kettlebells
    Did about a 1/2 hours worth of work. Two handed swings, one handed, alternates, figure eights, etc. Got a TON of good work in. Forgot how much I like these things as a change of pace.

    Not my greatest squat day. Had some issues with the weight today and didn't focus for my last set. Took things just a bit too lightly. Little upset, but still think I can hit a PR at this meet.

    After a bunch of thought and debate with myself, I've decided to stay raw for now. I was supposed to be back in gear after the meet in 2 weeks but I've made such good progress with raw training that I want to keep going. My attitude is better and I'm happier. I'm also learning to finally be proud of my raw strength which is why I started training to begin with. My bench has taken off as of late and it's caused me to finally decide to do something I never thought I would. Bench 600 raw. I've posted a topic in the Powerlifting forum to get some tips from Vinny on what he did to get there. I'm not ruling out ever returning to gear, but I'm much happier staying raw and getting stronger right now.

    yes you're much happier and excited about training. plus I know you loved what Vinny said on fb. gear numbers are always going up but not many hit raw 600lb benches.

    2.11.12 CandyAzz Classic Bench Meet
    Drove up the night before this meet and weighed in at 390. Somewhat light for me since I am usually walking around at about 395. Put in my opener of 500. My attempts were supposed to run 500/530 and the crew wanted me to take a shot at 555 for my 3rd.

    Meet Day:
    Warmups went really well. The weight was moving easy and everything felt really light and fast. After my 455 warmup, I decided I didn't want to do "just 500" again. I've got a meet PR of 505 and I've tripled 500 in training. I wanted to come out with a PR. I toyed with the idea of opening with my second attempt but didn't want to get over confident. I settled on opening with 520.



    Smoked it. Built alot of confidence off this lift. Pre-meet I didn't think I was ready for 555. After this, I felt confident. I thought for a second about taking 540 and then going 555 but I felt so good I wanted to give myself a chance to bench really big on a 3rd if I could hit the 555. So, I took 555 for a second.

    2nd Attempt


    You can see as soon as I start to push I get a little loose because I'm trying too hard to push "fast". My elbows flare out and I can't recover. Still, the weight didn't feel bad. I knew what I did wrong. Still felt confident on the 3rd.

    3rd Attempt


    I stay much tighter on this rep but in the end I couldn't push "through" it. I stalled, tried to shift the weight backwards, went to my triceps, and finally died. I don't think I'm far off from this attempt. I've only recently been pushing against weight in the upper 4's so I figured once more through my training program and 555 goes nicely. Gained alot of confidence and beat some inner demons a this meet. Looking forward to this cycle and nailing that lift in 12 weeks at the Paulsboro RPS meet.

    Thanks all. I couldn't believe I missed it. 520 went so easy I felt really good about the 555. Lesson learned, hit something that'll satisfy you before chasing something you're dreaming about. I really wish I'd have taken 540 as a second. 520 just isn't a bench that makes feel feel "strong". Still, it's another step on the road to 600.

    That speed is great but I don't like box squats if you are staying raw. I never found box squats to help if you are doing raw, try a littler lighter and use bands (either mini or monster mini) for full squats that will help more than boxes.
    then my favorite Leg Presses and adductor and abductor.
