    Negatives

    In a new bench routine I started a few weeks i do heavy negatives. Today was the second time ever doing them. I do them in a power-rack by myself what I have been doing is bring them down as slow as I can then pressing them back up as far as I can then racking them on the pins. I was wondering would I get more out of them by using a spotter and being able to have them help me fully press the weight?

    I was doing 5/3/1 for 5 months but my bench was not doing so well on that routine so I change my bench but kept 531 for my squat and deadlift.

    i would rather do board work or something, heavy negatives are just like failing over and over again. no point. unless you have weight releasers or something so that you can actually press something after the negative. otherwise your just destroying your CNS for no reason.

    For me the risk vs. reward for heavy negatives just doesn't add up. Plus I've never come across any really strong people who relied heavily on negatives. None of the strongest benchers I've ever talked to have used negatives. If some of the big benchers here disagree, I'll defer to their expertise, but I suspect very few, if any, of them use heavy negatives either.
    Plus didn't you just lose a bunch of weight? My BP goes in the crapper if I lose more than about 5-10 lbs.
