The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Foam Rolling & Warm-ups

    Bench
    Bar x 15 - close grip (pecs feel tight. )
    135 x 10
    155 x 5
    185 x 5
    215 x 3 - P.O.R
    245 x 3
    275 x 3 - belt & wraps
    295 x 1 x 2 - first bench was fast, second a bit slower
    285 x 1 - very fast!

    JM Presses
    135 x 12 x 3

    Triceps Pushdowns
    80 x 20 x 3

    BOBR
    135 x 12 x 3

    BW = 199 lbs

    Sick to my stomach Wednesday and Thursday. Still having some issues today, but I am eating again. Felt stiff, tight, and sore tonight. Left lat was letting me know it isn't healed. Avoided pull-ups and stayed light on BOBR.

    Bench was good tonight. First of 295 was fast. Second set was slower, but went up very well. 285 was almost like speed bench.

    Foam Rolling & Warm-ups

    Standing Ab Pulldowns
    80 x 20 x 4

    Squats
    180 x 5 - knee sleeves
    225 x 5
    275 x 3
    315 x 3 - added belt & wrist wraps
    365 x 3 - added briefs
    405 x 3 - good set
    405 x 2 - great set!
    315 x 0 - right shoulder 'popped'; had to reset
    315 x 14 - PR found religion on this set & threw up in my mouth a little

    BW = 200 lbs

    Worked hard on keeping my head up and staying tight. My elbows and biceps are sore from squeezing the bar. First set at 405 was good. The second set was awesome. No breaks in technique, very deep - solid squatting. 315 x 14 brought me close to Jesus. I was literally praying after that set.

    Been an exciting day. Had the vet out to the farm twice. Once for a cut on the right hind of a horse and another for a different horse that was colicky. Horses can't throw-up and an upset stomach can be life threatening depending on the severity of it. Doesn't appear to the be the case tonight.

    Warm-ups - Foam Rolling, Hip Flexibility

    Rope Ab Pulldowns
    80 x 20 x 4

    Deadlifts
    180 x 5 - hook grip
    225 x 5
    275 x 3
    315 x 3 - chalk
    365 x 3 - mixed grip & belt
    405 x 3 - kind of a sloppy set; came up on my toes on the 3rd rep; not getting my hips low enough; letting my hips come up too quick; sheer laziness.
    445 x 1
    475 x 1 - PR 25 lbs PR

    BW = a chubby 200 lbs

    I read through the Why I hate Deadlifting article again before pulling tonight. I tried to incorporate as much as I could remember. Pulling 475 felt much easier than anticipated. I was shocked at how fast it came up. I have a lot of work to do on my technique, but I am getting stronger!

    I read through EliteFTS' article Why I Hate the Deadlift and then tried to incorporate as many tips as possible into my lifting. The main change was getting my hips lower, initiating the lift by 'pushing' away from the floor as opposed to pulling up, and trying to remember to pull backwards. 475 came up far easier than 450 did a month or so ago. Better technique = a better pull.

    Warm-ups - lots and lots of foam rolling

    Bench
    Bar x 20 - close grip
    135 x 5
    155 x 5
    185 x 5
    205 x 5 - pinky on ring
    230 x 5 - ring finger on ring
    260 x 5 - belt & wraps; missed groove on 4th rep, powered through, shockingly easy set; widest grip I've used in a very long time
    165 x 20
    165 x 10 x 2
    165 x 9 - close grip
    155 x 10
    135 x 10

    BOBR
    135 x 20 x 3 - reps!
    135 x 12 x 2

    BW = 200

    Nothing special tonight. Went with a widest grip I've used on bench in a long, long time. Pecs and shoulder didn't mind it all. Worked on foam rolling and lots of reps. A bit surprised at how easy 260 went up, especially when I missed the groove on the 4th rep.

    Foam Rolling & Warm-ups

    Standing Ab Rope Pulldowns
    80 x 20 x 4

    Squats
    BW x 20 x 2
    185 x 5 - knee sleeves & loose belt
    225 x 5
    275 x 5
    290 x 5
    335 x 5 - tightened up belt; hips shot on 4th rep; 5th rep better
    380 x 5 - added briefs; damned hips.

    BW = 200

    It was hard to do anything tonight. I started out with a loose belt as my lower back has been bothering me. It really showed when the weights started getting heavier. My hips would come up way too quick. I need to see the chiropractor and the massage therapist. I'm way, way too tight. Heck, I've lost all feeling on the outside of my left, big toe due to tight psoas and piriformis. I've been hitting them with some stretching but its going to take more than a couple days to correct something I've let go on for months.

    I am a dumbass.

    Foam Rolling and Warm-ups

    SOHP
    Bar x 10~12
    85 x 5
    105 x 5
    125 x 5
    135 x 5
    155 x 5
    175 x 10 - PR; because I f'n could!
    135 x 10 x 3

    Bench - close grip (supersetted with BOBR)
    225 x 10 x 2
    185 x 10 x 2

    BOBR
    215 x 10 x 4

    BW = 199 lbs

    I added light, high-rep Good Mornings to my warm-ups. My traps used to be a weak point. I tossed in some high rep Face Pulls and Shoulder Shrugs into my warm-ups and now they are a strong point. The Good Mornings should do the same for my lower back. Next up, bringing my lats up. One thing at a time.

    I destroyed SOHP tonight. Can't help it. I like 'em and I'm good at 'em. Supersetting BOBR with close grip sounded like a good idea at the start. By the end, I was hating it. Got done with everything pretty quick this evening. Pretty much hit the next set as soon as I loaded the bar. About the only long rest I had was getting ready to hit 175.

    I had no intentions of going after a PR. As the program is written, I'm supposed to hit 5 reps and call it. But I was feeling really good last night. I knew, for some damned reason, that 10 was there. So I did it. I haven't been sore like this for a long time!

    Yep. I'm following the 3/5/1 variation of 5/3/1.

    First 3 or 4 sets are warm-up, followed by 3 working sets and then accessory work.

    Been suffering from some lower back trouble. I've seen the chiro a couple times this week and have another appt. next week. Left big toe is still numb. :unamused: I did what I could, which wasn't much.

    It was strange. I don't know what I did wrong, but I didn't have a chance in hell of holding the bar. However, the press off the chest was easy and I smoked the weight. I made sure I held 355 for a 3 count just to make sure I could. The only thing I can figure is a had a brain fart when I unracked the weight and by the time I got my head back into what I was doing the bar was already descending.

    Foam Rolling & Warm-ups

    Squats
    185 x 5 - c'mon fetus, I'm warming up with your max sets!
    225 x 5 - added knee sleeves; right knee hurts.
    275 x 3
    335 x 5 - added belt
    380 x 3 - added briefs
    425 x 1 - solid
    465 x 1 - PR added knee wraps
    500 x 1 - PR

    BW = 200 lbs

    It has been 4 months since I've hit a weight PR on squats. Lately, my technique has sucked. Tonight, I was dialed in and tight. I know I should video my PR attempts, but I'm afraid I'll jinx myself and miss the lift. :huh:

    I hit good depth and kept sinking. I didn't want to hit parallel, I wanted to break it! Good speed coming out of the hole (knee wraps and briefs will do that for you), hit about 3/4s of the way up and things started to slow way, way, down. I kept driving and made it to lock out. I was seeing was stars!

    Very happy with technique. Even on the heaviest sets my form was good. Keeping my posterior chain engaged helped me power the weight up. Lately I've been having trouble with leaning forward at the waist and transferring the weight to my quads. Tonight it was solid.

    Very happy. Now I just need to pull 500 lbs by the end of the year....
