The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Foam Rolling & Warm-Ups

    Bench
    Bar x 10 x 2 - close grip
    95 x 5 x 2
    135 x 5
    155 x 5
    190 x 5 - P.O.R.
    225 x 5 - added right knee sleeve
245 x 5 - middle finger on ring. Added belt and wrist wraps
265 x 6 - fairly easy. Felt like another rep was possible.

    Dumbbell Bench
75 x 0 - biceps pain in right arm flared like an S.O.B. Dropped the weights and called it a day.

    BW = 198 lbs

Strained my lower back Monday morning getting out of my office chair. Probably had to do with squats from the previous evening. Been dealing with that all week. Right knee and right biceps have been an issue for awhile. I hate taking time off to heal, but I know of no other way to deal with the issues aside from NSAIDs, rest, and ice.

Check you private messages. And just take a week off. I can only go heavy for a few weeks before taking a week off or deload and I'm a lot younger than you, lol. 2 and a half months is a long time.

Last time I touched a weight was 2/18/2012.

Foam Rolling & Warm-ups - spent a lot of extra time here

    Bench
    Bar x 20 x 2 - close grip
    95 x 3
    135 x 3
    155 x 3
    175 x 3
    195 x 3
    225 x 3 - P.O.R.
245 x 3 - R.O.R. added knee sleeve to right knee. Damned thing still ain't right.
    265 x 3 - Middle Finger O. R. wrist wraps & belt
    285 x 3 - Competition grip PR
    225 x 8 - P.O.R.

    BW = 191 lbs

Everything felt quick tonight. Right knee and biceps aren't 100% yet. The plan was simply to bench 3 reps and add 20 lbs to the bar until things started to slow down. I was very surprised to hit 285 for 3. Hit another set at 225 and called it a night.

I'll hit some more rehab stuff tomorrow night.

I am pretty surprised too. Form felt great. I need to do a conditioning phase for a month or so, but wanted to see where I stood on bench. I bet my squat has suffered a bit more than bench.

    Foam Rolling & Warm-ups

    Deadlifts
    135 x 3 - hook grip
    185 x 3
    225 x 3
    275 x 3
    315 x 3
    365 x 3 - belt & mixed grip
    405 x 1
    425 x 1 x 3
315 x 14 - form started to fall apart, so I stopped there.

    BW = 196 lbs

Last time I deadlifted was February 6. I figure I'm about 20 to 30 lbs down from my max deadlift.

It is Spring. The past few weekends have been dedicated to running new fence. We got about 1,715 feet removed, cleared the line, and have replaced about 1,000 feet of fence. Might not sound like much, but considering each run is 4 strands, that is 4,000 feet of wire strung. Not to mention 4 sets of H-braces, all the associated terminations, in-line strainers, 50 line posts, etc.

My hands are shredded. Tying, bending, knotting, etc., high tensile wire with your bare hands is rough. I don't see how the damned Kiwis do it so easily. Nine hours straight of running fence destroys me so badly I often can't do anything but run the mower the following day.

It'll probably take me the rest of Spring to finish all the fencing. Hopefully it'll be another 30 years before it needs to be done again.

    Foam Rolling & Warm-ups

    SOHP
    Bar x 5
    65 x 5
    85 x 5
    105 x 5
    135 x 3
    155 x 3
    175 x 3 - belt & wrist wraps
    195 x 4 - cramp in left glute on 4th rep.
205 x 2 - ugly, not finding the groove on SOHP

    Bench - Close grip
    225 x 10 - slingshot, wrist wraps, belt
    300 x 5 x 3 - knee sleeve on right knee
335 x 1 - comp. grip; form was crap but the weight was easy

    Triceps Pushdowns
    70 x 25 x 3

    BOBR
    45 x 25 x 3

    BW = 197 lbs

Its been about 20 days since I've overhead pressed. Took it slow and easy tonight.

Right knee and right biceps are still nowhere near 100%. I think they're better, but sometimes it is hard to tell. Traps are very tight and knotted up pretty bad. All the foam rolling in the world doesn't seem to be helping. Had fun tonight. Moved some weight and did pretty much as I pleased.

    Foam Rolling & Warm-ups

Standing Ab Pulldowns (Supersetted with GM)
    70 x 20 x 4

    Good Morning
    Bar x 10
    45 x 10
    135 x 10 x 2

    Squats
    135 x 10 - knee sleeves
    185 x 5
    225 x 5
    275 x 5
    315 x 3
    335 x 2 - added belt
    355 x 1 - super fast & easy

    BW = 196 lbs

Last squat workout was 2/12/2012. Right knee still bothers me somewhat. I've had issues with that knee since I was in my twenties. Stopped playing racquetball because the rapid change of directions stressed it. It did feel better once I was completely warmed up and the weights got heavier.

Everything felt light and moved quick. I was going to work up to some reps at 405, but it has been awhile since I've done squats. I would hit some BW squats between sets just to see how things felt. I am going to be sore tomorrow. I called it at 355. No need to strain anything now! Raw, I left at least 50 lbs on the table tonight.

I've gone through one workout of the major lifts. It is time to put a plan together and start training for real now. Most likely I'll go back to 3/5/1. It is simple and easy to do with only a barbell and Power rack.

I think 3/5/1 or Juggernaut will be a good choice. I think after my next meet I'm going to back down some and take it easy. Smart move by not pushing it, especially since you haven't squatted in some time.

    Foam Rolling & Warm-ups

    Standing Ab Pulldowns
    70 x 30
    80 x 25 x 3

    Good Mornings (supersetted with Abs)
    45 x 15
    95 x 10
    135 x 10 x 2

    Deadlifts (Sumo)
    135 x 5 - double overhand grip
    185 x 5
    225 x 3
    275 x 3
315 x 2 - tried mixed grip on first rep. Felt like my hand was being forced open as I dragged the bar up my leg.
    345 x 1 - added belt; hook grip
    385 x 1
425 x 1 - mixed grip; setup with my knees pointed more outwards
    445 x 1

    BW = 198

I hurt all over. I tweaked something in my back Monday. Feels decidedly uncomfortable. Figured I would give sumo deadlifts a shot as it is easier on the back than conventional. I haven't done sumo in over 4 years. I doubt I went over 315 then. Maybe not even over 275 lbs. That makes almost every working set a PR. Sumo wasn't bad at all. I think I could have pulled 485 if I pushed it.

I've pulled 485 conventional. With a bit of time, 500 is in the bag. I pulled an easy 445 sumo last night. I know that 465 would have positively come up. I am pretty sure 485 could have been pulled too. For right now, there is a 40 lbs difference.

    Good Mornings (supersetted with pulldowns)
    45 x 15
    95 x 10

    Squats
    135 x 1 - right knee hurt like a mofo.
    135 x 10 - knee sleeves
175 x 5 - close stance; slightly wider than shoulder width
    225 x 5
    275 x 5
315 x 3 - damned lower lat hurts a lot. :unamused: Feels like someone is sticking a knife in it.

340 x 3 - added belt; widened stance a little; sat back more. Great set. Was going to call it a day until my wife came out and told me not to hurt myself because we are supposed to go dancing this weekend.

385 x 3 - added briefs. Okay, I admit it - I was taking a chance of tweaking myself even worse to avoid dancing at a friend's wedding Saturday. Set was way, way easy. Lat hurt a lot. Ibuprofen & contrast showers.
