The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Foam Rolling, Mobility Work, Warm-ups

    Squats
    135 x 6
    135 x 8
    225 x 6
    275 x 3
    325 x 3
    365 x 3 - belt & knee sleeves
    405 x 2

    Deadlifts

    365 x 3 - mixed grip
    405 x 3
    450 x 1 - completely gassed

    BW = 197 lbs

    Didn't get the reps I wanted on my final sets. Still, I'm not too disappointed. I was optimistic with the final weights and I came fairly close to nailing it. Gotta travel for work the next couple days which means missing Monday's overhead pressing. :grumpy: But I get a four day weekend afterwards.

    Foam Rolling & Mobility Work

    Ab Rope Pulldowns
    80 x 20
    100 x 15 x 3

    Good Morning
    45 x 10
    135 x 10 x 3

    Squats
    135 x 3
    195 x 3
    240 x 3
    280 x 3 - fed the horses after this set
    305 x 1 - no energy, felt like 1,000 lbs
    305 x 5 - added belt and sleeves (felt like a loser)
    340 x 5 - released Nibbler from his stall
    370 x 5 - good set, but I had to resort to knee wraps. Think it is a PR though....

    BW = 200 lbs

    Do not think I'll be doing Good Mornings as part of my warm-up again. It tightened up my lower back and made me feel like crap. Still, I need to figure out a way to get them in there.

    I wouldn't do GM's with weight for a warmup. Maybe with light bands or a broomstick, or maybe even the bar. 3 sets of 10 with 135 is a lot to do for a warmup. My back would be pumped up also. Do them after, or after deadlifts. I am going to start doing them light after my deadlifts and see how it goes. But that depends on how much they beat up my hamstrings.

    Mobility Work - lots of shoulder distraction and compression

    Bench - competition grip
    bar x 25
    95 x 10
    135 x 5
    160 x 5
    190 x 5
    225 x 5
    250 x 5 - belt & wraps; I'm too short to press a heavy weight out of the rack. Had to put 2 x 4's under the bench and plates under my feet.
    275 x 5 x 2

    JM Press
    135 x 10 - safety bars were too high
    135 x 15 x 2

    Face Pulls
    50 x 25 x 3 - normally do these as warm-ups

    Shoulder Shrugs
    315 x 6 - shoulder didn't like 'em much.

    BOBR
    135 x 15 x 2

    BW = 197 lbs

    Did a few things different this evening. Partly because I started late and partly to see if I could save some energy. I concentrated on mobility, compression, and distraction on both shoulders. Worked well and I was ready to bench using a competition grip afterwards. 275 x 5 x 2 is a PR. Could have easily got another couple reps at that weight.

    I'm going to stick to a heavy band for shoulder shrugs. Didn't like the bar at all. Tweaked my left shoulder.

    By the time I hit barbell rows I was getting tired. Picked an easy weight and got some reps done.

    Deadlifts - worked up to 455 x 1. Tried 485. Broke the floor, got to right below my knees and gave up. Lifting with the hook grip feels good. But after 405, my grip gives out and switch to a mixed grip. With that grip, it feels like the bar gets out in front of me. I'm probably letting my hips shoot up, but cannot really tell. Disappointed.

    I had some time to think about it and realized I certainly didn't set myself up for success. The only thing I had eaten all day was a double cheeseburger. I didn't get much sleep the sleep the night before and I'm still a little sore from bench work. Still, I really thought I had at least 485 lbs. We'll see how it goes in another month or so.

    There you go. Eating and sleeping have alot to do with how well you perform in the gym and at meets. Hopefully next time you'll smash it!

    I scared to death I'm getting too old to make gains. Probably not true yet, but it still worries me.

    I wouldn't let age bother you. I think you might need to change some things if you stall and adjust accordingly. Yes, you might not make huge gains, but a PR is a PR, wether it be 5lbs or 50lbs.

    Foam Rolling, Mobility Work, Prehab, Warm-ups

    Bench
    Bar x 20
    95 x 10
    135 x 5
    185 x 3
    225 x 1
    255 x 1
    290 x 3 x 2 - belt & wraps; ulnar nerve popped in my right elbow on 2nd rep 2nd set. Funny bone hurts.
    245 x 12 x 3 - close grip with slingshot

    Kroc Rows
    105 x 15 x 3

    BW = 197

    Bench felt good. I need to concentrate on pausing at the bottom. I am way too used to touch and go. That will not cut it in a competition.

    First time I ever filmed my bench:

    Foam Rolling & Mobility

    Face Pulls
    50 x 20 x 2

    Squats
    Bar x 20
    135 x 10
    185 x 3
    225 x 1
    275 x 1
    315 x 1
    365 x 5 x 2 - belt & knee sleeves; first time hitting 2 sets of 5 with this kind of weight.
    455 x 2 - reverse band; feeling pretty gassed.

    Standing Ab Pulldowns
    80 x 20
    100 x 15 x 2

    BW = 196 lbs

    Normally, after hitting a set of 365 x 5, I would drop weight and do some reps. Today, I went for another set. The only way I'm going to squat stronger is to spend some time with a little more weight on my back. The last rep of the last set was pretty damned good. Left me pretty tired. I'm not used to putting that kind of effort in my squats. Now I need to add 40 to 365 and hit that for 5.

    If felt good to man up and do the work. After today's squats, I feel that I'll be making quicker progress in weight.

    I need to have someone watch me and give me some verbal cues. I'm letting my hips shoot up too fast which screws up the whole deadlift. I've had the lift fairly well dialed before and moved 485 without too much trouble. I need to find my groove again.

    Try doing more quad work. Do some Olympic squats to help strengthen your quads. Also, try slowing down some. Focus on driving with your legs. But your right, having someone watching you and yelling out what to do helps alot.
