The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

I'm learning how to do front squats. Would like to get some decent shoes and hit some Oly squats (I lift barefoot). Slowing down - I give that advice so often. Be patient, slow down, wait for the bar to move. Then I go out and do exactly not that! LOL

I'm going to start hitting some front squats as well. I suggest a pair of Olympic shoes from VS athletics. They are the cheapest around. You squat barefoot?

Yep. I wear shoes when I bench. Otherwise, it is barefoot. Cheaper than buying Oly shoes! I've tried the front squat, but I don't do well creating the 'shelf' for the bar to rest upon. I'm getting better though!

You might want to invest in pair, lol. I tried front squats with my SSB and I love it, so I'll be using it for my front squats from now on.

It is official, I have what is termed, ďathleteís heart.Ē Lifting heavy weights causes a significant increase of pressure on the body when you strain. This includes the circulatory system. To combat these extreme pressures, the left ventricle has grown a little more muscle (mild concentric hypertrophy) and my right ventricle cavity size is mildly enlarged. What is important is that my systolic and diastolic filling/function is normal and my estimated ejection fraction is 60% (normal is 55% to 75%). My right atrium is normal, but my left atrium is mildly dilated (enlarged).

This enlargement is due, in part, to my mitral valve. There is evidence of bileaflet thickening/calcification along with a trace of regurgitation. The calcification is because Iím old. It is a normal part of the aging process. A trace amount of regurgitation is nothing to worry about. It happens.

Iím happy I have an Athleteís Heart. It is better than having an old man's heart. Iíll need another echo in a couple years to keep an eye out for any changes. All in all, Iím fairly happy with the results.

    Foam Rolling, Mobility, Warm-ups

    SOHP
    Bar x 15
    95 x 5
    115 x 3
    135 x 1
160 x 1 - was supposed to be 150, but I can't read the damned chart without my glasses.
    185 x 1 - why the hell not?
    200 x 4 - wraps & belt; wanted 5... Christmas wasn't today folks.
    200 x 3 x 2 - lost my air and tightness on the 3rd rep 1st set. :furious:
    135 x 15
    135 x 12

    Triceps Pushdowns
skipped - right elbow is still sore from my ulnar nerve popping out of its groove. Didn't do any triceps accessory work.

    BOBR
    225 x 8 x 3
205 x 10 - the rest is a drop set. Damned near blew up my heart... thankfully mine's athletic.
    185 x 10
    165 x 10
    135 x 10

    Done!

    Foam Rolling, Mobility Warm-ups

    Bench
    Bar x 25 x 2 - P.O.R
    95 x 5
    135 x 5
    185 x 3
    225 x 1
    265 x 1
    305 x 1 x 7 - worked my grip out from P.O.R. to Index Finger on Ring (I.O.R.). Hit 3 singles with I.O.R.

    JM Press
    135 x 3 - Ulnar nerve hurts like a bitch.

    Triceps Pushdowns
    80 x 4 - Yep, it hurts.

    Pullups
    BW x 10

Supposed to hit the follow WOD later today:

    4 rounds
50 double unders - f'me, I can barely jump rope at all. DUs aren't happening.
    40 Airsquats
    30 situps
    20 push ups
    10 Pull ups

    BW = 195 lbs

Felt pretty weak today. Screwed with the bench setup until I found something comfortable with regards to rack height, etc. Around the 3rd or 4th rep at 305, I felt a little stronger. I think its time to break out the DMSO for my elbow.

    4 rounds
50 double unders - for me it was 150 singles
    40 Airsquats
    30 situps
    20 push ups
    10 Pull ups

Took me 36 minutes to finish the WOD. I don't do DUs, so I had to knock out 150 singles. Afterwards, I tried a couple DUs and actually got a couple. Very pleased. Pushups were cake no matter how exhausted I was. Situps sucked though.

    Foam Rolling, Mobility, Warm-up

    Bench - P.O.R
    Bar x 10 x 2
    135 x 5
    185 x 3
    225 x 1
    265 x 1
    295 x 2 x 3 - belt & wraps
    335 x 2 - slingshot
    245 x 10 x 2 - Close Grip
    245 x 8

    Triceps Pushdowns
    100 x 15 x 3 - Ulnar nerve still sore, but getting better

    BOBR
    225 x 10 x 3 - getting stronger on these

    Face Pulls
    50 x 20 x 3

    BW = 196 lbs

Did not feel strong on bench. Concentrated on pausing at the bottom and holding the lockout on each rep. Thought I did a good job. Staying tight for both reps with all the pauses was tough. Felt like I was running out of air. Bent Over Barbell Rows are getting better.

Wore my singlet for bench tonight. It was comfortable. Fits okay as far as I can tell.

Great time training with Donnie Thompson on Christmas Day! Highlights:

    Bench
    315 x 1 x 5

I need a Thompson Fat Pad. If you ever get a chance to bench on one, you'll never want to bench on anything else. It is awesome. Texas Power Bar is pretty damned nice too.

Donnie lent me a size 60 multi-ply blast shirt (I would need closer to a 52). I have no problems getting the shirt on. Donnie figures I'll get about as much out of the shirt as from a slingshot. It has been converted to an open back shirt with a reinforced collar. Looks like fun!

Did a Mini-Cindy this morning (Wednesday):

    AMRAP in 12 minutes

    5 Pull-ups
    10 Push-ups
    15 Squats

I did 8 rounds. Yes, my conditioning sucks.

Went over a few things. I took my logbook with my workouts in it. He liked the way you setup my training for the competition. Really like the 5 sets of heavy singles. I did give you credit for the plan. Donnie said you are using your head and being smart - good stuff. Benching was good. He wants to see me bring the bar down faster. Slow down, slow up. I need to work on my lats and upper back to build the support structure I need to bring the bar down into my lats. Overall, pretty good.

315 felt very easy. No problems pausing at the bottom or holding the lockout. Thinking about trying 330 for a 3rd attempt... We'll see how I feel at the competition.

Calf still hurts pretty good. I've been limping around for a week or more. Have been avoiding any extra work aside from bench. Need to get the leg sorted. Would like to do a full power meet in the Spring.

At this point, it is too late to change a thing. He thought the plan was well laid out and showed some smarts. He does want to see me get some box squats done. But that is for after the meet.
