    Dixie Bench Press Championships

Class - 198 lbs, Pro Masters Raw

Opener - 300 lbs; easy press, 3 whites. Discovered I couldn't get my feet flat on the floor. I'm too short. Yes, I bench flat footed. First competition I ever did back in the dinosaur era required feet flat on the floor. Been doing it that way ever since.

2nd - 315 lbs; easy lift, 3 whites. Added a rubber mat under my feet. Worked perfectly!

3rd - 325 lbs; easy as pie, 3 whites! A little conservative for my 3rd attempt. After my last training session, figured I was good for 325 lbs. Wasn't sure about anything beyond that. It was my first meet in forever and I wanted to end of a positive note. I left at least 5 lbs on the platform - much more likely 10 lbs. As fast as the bar flew up, 340 looked doable.

Took 1st place in my class (might have been the only one in it; I think the other 198 lb'er was amateur). What really surprised me was taking 1st Place Overall Pro Masters Raw. We had 27 lifters and a lot of them were Masters. Thought several or them were Pro too. Taking overall took me completely by surprise.

Judging was spot on at the meet. The judges didn't hand anyone a gift, nor did they take anything from the lifters. Good judging!

Saw a couple big lifts. Big Wayne pressed 575 @ 275. Missed 600 lbs at the lockout (Raw). Had a 181 lb'er nail a 600 lbs bench (geared). Good stuff!

Thanks Hopper! It was your programming that got me there! And we both know that is half the battle! I can honestly say, I couldn't have done it without your help.

I laid it out and you put in the hard work. You made the right call on all 3 attempts. Now, you get ready for the next one and set goals to beat the 325 . I'm glad I got a chance to help you, and hope I get a chance to do it again.

We have to start the 10 week program for April 6th. I need to see where my squat is though. Hurt my calves and haven't done lower body in about a month.

Sounds good, so your definitely doing the meet in April? Would you be interested in some weightlifting shoes? I bought another pair and I might be selling my old pair.

I wear an 8 to a 8.5 depending on the shoe.

Not completely sold on competing in April. I would like to train for it and enter if training goes well.

    Mobility Work & Warm-ups
    Band distraction stuff is wonderful!

    Squats
    Bar x a lot
    135 x 8
    185 x 5
    235 x 5
    285 x 3
    325 x 5
345 x 5 x 2 - hit parallel on 1st set; broke parallel on 2nd set for all reps. 2nd set felt pretty good. Yeah for stretch reflex rebound.
355 x 5 - Damn near killed me... left knee caved pretty badly on 5th rep. Concentrated on forcing it out, weight came up. Very gassed on this set. Hard to stay tight.
215 x 3 x 3 - paused squats for a 3 count at the bottom. Last set was the best.

Standing Ab Pulldowns (supersetted with ab wheel of death)
    100 x 15 x 2

    Ab Wheel of Tortuous Death
    15 x 2

    BW = 194 lbs

Its been 6 weeks since I've squatted. Fairly happy with the work I got done today. Gonna be pretty sore tomorrow... will add more accessory exercises as my work capacity increases.

Yep. I would rather have a couple days to 'fudge' things. I was going to start on the 28th, but with my work schedule, starting today worked a little better.

I would have started on Monday of next week. But I'll be out in the field sampling all next week. Not sure how long I'll be stuck out there. Starting a hair early to knock the rust off.

    Foam Rolling & Band Distraction

    Face Pulls
    50 x 20 x 2

    Bench
    Bar x a lot x 4 or 5 sets - P.O.R.
    135 x something
    185 x 5
    225 x 5
    275 x 5 x 2- belt & wrist wraps
280 x 5 - had another left in the tank
    245 x 10 x 2 - close grip; + slingshot
    225 x 7 - close grip; no slingshot

    One Arm Barbell Shrugs
    95 x 15 x 3 - hook grip

    Meadow Rows
    95 x 3 x 8 - used straps

    Planks
    30 seconds x 3

    BW = 194 lbs

Good work tonight. 280 x 5 might be a PR. Enjoyed adding a few new movements to the training. The Thompson Fat Pad is absolutely amazing. I never want to bench on anything else - ever.
