The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Friend talked me into going to her CF box this morning.

    Warm-up
500 meter row - Mobility is a problem for me. So much so that I had to have the two girls on either side of my strap my feet into the rowing machine. I promptly smoked them both to 500 meters, but was trapped until they decided to let me out. Additionally, they were holding a conversation while rowing... and they weren't that much slower than me.

I beat them, but it took me minutes to recover. The girls had nothing to recover from...

    Band therapy stretching stuff

Deadlifts - the real reason I showed up
    135 x 5 - hook grip
    225 x 5
    315 x 4 - mixed grip
    365 x 3
    405 x 2
    455 x 5
    485 x 1

It has been 5 weeks since I deadlifted. I matched my all time PR easily. If I had been smarter with my numbers, 500 was certainly possible today. I have not felt confident in my deadlifts in years. Today I did. I kind of like this CF stuff... hot girls in tight little outfits lifting heavy stuff? Yummy! Nothing but deadlifts today? Hell yes!

Don't ever let a CF person know where you live. Ever. Because they're going to show up at your house for lunch with a barbell and weights. Then they'll say, I missed the WOD yesterday. Lets do it today. It'll be fun!

    4 Rounds
    400 meter run
    15 SOHP & 135 lbs

Got through the first two rounds before shin splints reduced me to a shambling walk. Took me 19:39. I f'n hate running. I also hate CF women. I don't care how good that ass looks as it bounces along it front of me.

It just ain't worth it for the view....

I probably will. I'm just looking for something to aid in my work capacity/fitness level. I can be better than I am while still getting stronger. Have to be smart about my approach and do it slowly, but it will come. Strength is still my primary focus.

Spent all day at a removal site. Simple dig and haul but its kind of cool with all the big equipment out there. By the end of the day, I was pretty gassed.

    AMT
0.54 miles in 5 minutes (Rolling Hills) - happy with this; lot tougher than the previous weeks, went further and felt better.

    3 Rounds
    10 hanging leg raising
    10 pull-ups
1 minute shoulder prehab with body blades

    10" Strongman Log (88 lbs)
    88 lbs x 4 - didn't know it was this damned heavy
    138 lbs x 4 x 2

    BW = 201 lbs

    AMT
    0.56 miles @ 5:00 minutes (Rolling Hills) - PR

    Squats - Explosive
    135 x 8 x 2
    225 x 4
295 x 3 x 8 - had to put the belt and knee sleeves on the 5th set.
    225 x 12 x 2 - Oly squats
    275 x 8 - pause squats (quick 6 to 10 count in the hole)
    275 x 6 - pause squats

    Ab Rope Pulldowns
    80 x 25
    100 x 15 x 2
    80 x 15

First set of squats at 295 was awful. Couldn't get tight, wasn't initiating the lift at the hips, wasn't sitting back enough. Second set was okay, next two were mixed. Lower back and left knee started to bother me, so I slapped on the knee sleeves and belt. Everything came together and things were as they should be. Speed was there and the lifts were good.

I have no issues getting tight by forcing my abs out into the belt. Without the belt, I can't get that same feeling of tightness. Need to work on that.

    Inverted Batman Imitations

    Band Pull-Aparts
    mini-band x 20 x 3

    Face Pulls
    70 lbs x 20 x 3

    Bench - Reps
    Bar x 15 x 2 - feet up; competition grip
    95 x 10
    135 x 10
225 x 5 - feet down; trying the new foot position Dave Hoff showed me. Much better arch, otherwise, it sucks balls (think that means I'm doing it right)
    250 x 10 x 2
    270 x 4 x 2 - close grip
    225 x 8 x 2 - pause bench; competition grip

    Lat Pulldowns
    120 x 15 x 4

    Side/Front Raises (giant set)
    5 x 10 x 3

    BW = 203

Using the new foot position is costing me about 15 pounds on bench. Wife came out and took a look. Said it was a significant improvement over my previous setup. Right now, it is costing me a few pounds, but it should prove to a better overall setup with time.

    All kinds of band/mobility work

    Squats - SSB
    135 x 10
    225 x 5
    315 x 8 x 2
    165 x 10
    165 x 20

    Reverse Lunges
    10 x 2

    BW = 205 lbs

Even with all the warm-up, that is all my back could take. Hurts like a bitch. That is what happens when I sit around for two weeks nursing a sprained wrists like a little baby.

I was lifting at my wife's gym, so no chalk allowed. I have small hands with sweaty palms. I need some chalk to absorb the oils out of my hands to get a good grip. Without the chalk, I switch to a mixed grip around 315 lbs. I use my left hand for the underhand grip, which is my sprained wrist.

Well, that didn't work. So I tried to reverse my mixed grip. That was extremely uncomfortable. So I said to hell with it and strapped up. I'm going for reps anyway.

Back got very tight and painful towards the end. But I was able to finish and recover fairly well. This morning I'm suffering from some sciatica symptoms on the left side. Nothing horrible, just a minor annoyance. A little bit of inversion therapy should fix me right up.

My back is better. The pain during the workout isn't debilitating and I am recovering quicker. The progress is slow but it is there.

I'm hoping to bench tomorrow. I'm going to wrap my wrist from the very first set with the bar and see how it goes.

I did sled drag sprints with 45 lbs Wednesday. On my third sprint, I really opened it up and tore both calves. Grade I strain in my left and Grade II tear in my right. I can't walk very well at the moment.

Today, I helped my daughter, son-in-law, and their friend with some lifts. Kimi squatted 135 lbs after only a couple months of lifting (matched her husbands PR). She attempted 185 on deadlifts and failed. I fixed her set-up, and she pulled it on her second attempt. Very proud of her! Her friend, Tommy, pulled 300 lbs and he's never pulled over 185 before. The son-in-law, Brian, is a complete newbie and needs to get some reps under his belt.

While I had the help, I did some benching.

    Bench
    Bar x 20 x 2 - feet up because I tore both calfs.
    135 x 10
    225 x 15
    275 x 4 - wrist wraps
    300 x 4 - belt

Not much, but better than nothing!

First real bench workout since the meet and first workout since my calf tears.

    Prehab/Rehab
    Inverted Band Work
    Shoulder Band Work

Band Pull Aparts (superset with Face Pulls)
    20 x 3

    Face Pulls
    60 x 20 x 3

    Bench
    Bar x 20 - R.O.R.
    135 x 10
    225 x 5
    265 x 2 - belt & wraps
285 x 2 x 5 - found the groove on the third set. Good pause at the bottom and top
    305 x 3 x 2 - close grip
    270 x 5 - pause 1" from chest
    260 x 5

    Lat Pulldowns
    100 x 15 x 4

    Side/Front Raises (giant set)
    5 x 10 x 3

    BW = 201 lbs

Skipped pull ups. Not ready to jump on that calf yet. Abs were sore after bench. New foot position is taking some getting used to.

Left work late and got stuck in road construction traffic. Cut my workout time in half.

    AMT
0.96 miles in 10 minutes - Hey, I made 10 minutes without stroking out, ripping, tearing, or otherwise damaging myself. I'll take it.

Hanging Leg Raises - ab work
    10 x 2 - supersetted with pullups

    Pullups
    5 x 2

Stretching quads and calves - a lot of time spent stretching.

    BW = 200 lbs

    0.51 miles in 5 minutes

    Squats
135 x 5 - hate squatting for reps. Its too much like cardio
    225 x 5 x 2
    315 x 3 x 2 - first set sucked. Second set was better
315 x 6 - I've lost some stamina and strength. Missed the rack on the left side when reracking the weights. Being shorty sucks. Calves did okay. Have some huge knots in both of them I'm trying to work out.

    BW = 200 lbs

That is all the time I had. I got under the bar, got some work done. Today was all about seeing where I was. Not too bad all things considered.

Stopped by Donnie Thompson's new 'Compound' after my wife's 5 K run. The place has two monolifts, two power racks, one bench, a bajillion different bars, More plates than you'll ever need, and a bunch of ancillary stuff. It is small, but very well equipped.

Used the Turtle Wax Orbital Polisher on my calves. Yes, it does work well. Plus, my lower legs are highly polished now.

In a couple weeks Robert Garza and Olin Kreutz will be headed down for some off season training. That will be pretty cool.

Some plans are in the works to try and help powerlifting for powerlifters. As Dave might have noticed in his last meet, powerlifters are often treated like crap. Meets starting late, running long into the night, crappy judging, poorly organized and poorly ran. Most other sporting organization would fold pretty quick. But somehow powerlifting keeps struggling along.

In a couple weeks, there'll be a kettlebell swinging thing... can't really call it a competition. You gotta swing the beast for 300 reps. Every 75th rep, you take a shot. Should be a lot of fun!

Trying Hoff's new foot position puts a lot more stress on my back. I'm tighter, but it is much more uncomfortable. Calves started to ache about halfway through. The foot position is on my toes trying to drive down through my heel. Need to catch a video of it soon.

Not yet. The position is still too new and uncomfortable for me. I'm working so hard on foot placement that I have yet to put it all together. I think I feel tighter and have a bigger arch. My weights are still good too. So there is that.

Back felt good after squats. Started to tighten up and ache with the reverse hypers. However, at no time was it so painful I was laying on the ground in agony. Definitely a step in the right direction.
