The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Did some power cleans today. I suck at 'em. Worked up to 135 lbs - weight was very easy, but form was horrible. Did some kettlebell swings & snatches, then:

WOD - 20 minutes (EMOM alternating)
    Cleans
    115 x 3
    Wallballs
    20 x 15

I made 8 round before my back wouldn't take anymore. All the work before had my back tight, the wall balls finished me off. After writhing around on the ground for 15 minutes:

Strict Hanging Abs - shins to the bar
    8 x 3

    Ring Dips
    10 x 3

L Pull-ups - wanted to do 'em plank style, but more like an L.
    5 x 3

Nice job recently Tim. I haven't checked your journal in quite awhile, but you have made some really good improvements, especially benching.
    Best competition lifts:
    650lbs. raw squat
    441lbs. raw bench
    580lbs. raw deadlift
    1650lbs. raw total

    Thanks April!

My back has issues. I get what I can done on squats and deadlifts, but I'm somewhat limited on the work I can do for those lifts. Hence, my bench is doing very well. Figure I'll have 400 within a couple years.

I did some kettlebell training BS Friday. Enjoyed it for the most part. Reverse lunges with a kettlebell suck a bit more than reverse lunges without.

This is my last week before the meet Saturday. Today was light:

    Overhead Press
    Bar x 10 x 2
    65 x 8
    75 x 8
    85 x 8

    Squats
Bar x 10 x 2 - supersetted these with my first two sets of overhead press
    155 x 8 x 3

    Deadlifts
    155 x 8 x 3

    Clean & Press
155 x 1 - yeah, it was stupid but fun

    Did some ab work.

Bodyweight is right around 203 lbs. Doesn't look like we'll be able to weigh in on Friday. If that is the case, I'm not going to worry about making the 198 lbs class. Would rather be fat and hit the poundages I want on the platform. It isn't like I'm setting any records.

My attempts will look something like: 330, 340, and 350. Those might shift upwards a few lbs depending on how things go at the meet. Would be fun to go 330, 350, and then give 360 a ride.

I am nervous. Plan is to open with 330 (meet PR), 2nd attempt 345 (all time PR), and shoot for 355~360 for a third. This cycle, I've hit 335 x 2. Last cycle I hit 340 x 1 and barely missed 345. I feel stronger this time around.

    Meet went well.

I stepped out for lunch and when I returned, the schedule had been moved up a hour! Talk about panic! Everybody was warming up while I was changing. I blasted through my warm ups but never got to my final one before I was on deck.

Felt rushed and nervous for the first attempt. With the Thompson Fat Pad (which I love) on the meet bench, my feet wouldn't make solid contact with the ground. The kept slipping. I just tried to leave them in once place while I hit my opener (330 lbs). Easy lift. Even without leg drive.

I used some 100 lbs plates for my feet on the second attempt (345 lbs). Easy lift. Third attempt... I wanted 360 lbs, but I stuck to the plan and 355 lbs. Had to grind that one out. Perfect third attempt. Three whites every lift.

I am pleased. Great meet. Saw some big lifts. Got some tips from Dave Hoff. Good stuff!

My warm ups for the meet were compressed into about 15 minutes because they were running a hour ahead (the only bad thing about the meet).

    Bar x 20 x 2
    135 x 8
    225 x 4
    275 x 1
    300 x 1
    Opener @ 330

It was not ideal, but I picked an opener I knew I could hit on a bad day. Sure, I was panicked and stressed about my warm up plan being tossed out of the window. Still, I had a plan for the platform (thanks Pops), stuck to it, and got three out of three with a 15 lbs PR.

    You gotta lift smart.

Now that I've said that, Monday was all about doing stuff I haven't done before. First up was front squats. My shoulder mobility sucks. With the lighter stuff, I was front squatting with my arms crossed like an X. Took it up to 155 lbs and was able to grip it correctly. Did 3 or 4 sets of 5 reps, did a bunch of singles, went down in weight and did some more reps. Mostly, I was trying to figure out the technique. Wearing my converse, I had to elevate my heel in order to squat correctly. It was fun.

Next up was snatches. First was some partials - just some pulls from the hang position (no idea if my terminology is correct), then some hang snatches. Worked up to 85 lbs. Then a full snatch. Weight was super light, so there wasn't much of a dip to catch the bar. It was fun.

    Then the WOD:

    13 minutes - AMRAP

    13 chest to bars
13 box jumps (20" box - it was all we had)
    13 snatches at 80 lbs

    Got 3 rounds.

Had fun and tried some new things. Plus working out with a hot CF girl is just plain fun. And now I can incorporate front squats into my training.

One other thing... lululemon yoga pants on a girl - yes, yes, yes!

    Today:

    AMT
    0.51 miles in 5 minutes

    Bodyblades - shoulder prehab
Couple sets for a minute each

    Bench
    Bar x 20 x 2 - medium grip
    135 x 10
    225 x 10 - 60 seconds between sets
    225 x 8
    225 x 6
    135 x 12

    Hammer Curls
    25 x 12 x 3

    KB Swings
    53 x 10

    KB Snatches
53 x 10 - right hand; no chalk and the handle on that thing was slick. Wasn't going to try with my left hand. Wrist is still tweaked from trying to put the Bobcat track back on the machine.

    AMT
    0.51 miles in 5 minutes
