The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Coke: Yes agreed it is nice to have a training partner. I will say that I have had good ones and bad ones before but either way beats going solo. I also am sure some of the former good ones who are on this site will get a good laugh out of me having to wait for a training partner to show up.....

Had a real bad headache on Monday morning so I didnt hit the gym. Probably some kind of volcanic ash side effect. I read the HCT-12 preview article and I am interested to see what it looks like and maybe try it out myself. I have another HG this weekend so I am taking it a bit light this week in the gym.

    Workout: -5:00am

Warmup- light stretching to include some RC work

    1/2 mile warmup fast walk

Incline to Flat Bench Press than a break 4 times:
    Incline Close Grip Bench Press 135*10, 165*10, 185*10, 205*6
    BB BP Wide Grip 135*10, 185*10, 225*4, 225*5

    Skull Crushers 75*12, 95*10, 105*7

Crossbody Tricep Pulls L/R 50*10, 60*10 for 3 sets -used handle to save my grip

Curls to Lat Raises to BB BP than a break 3 times:
Std Alt Bicep Curls 35*10 for 3 sets
Lat Raises Front 20*10 for 3 sets
Speed BB BP Regular Grip 225*10, 225*8, lost speed so no 3rd set

    Cool Down

    1/2 mile jog

    100 crunches, 50 squats, 50 pushups

Song of the Workout: "Liquid Separation", Front Line Assembly

    Randomness:
I saw a former co-worker this morning at the gym who was not real cool to me when I got let go and I took the high road........ I think I am glad I did. I thought I would have more to say about it but I am thinking better of it now.

Coke: I am the last person who should be living in the past but it still isnt going to be easy seeing him at the gym on a regular basis. My only hope is he falls off the cardio bunny wagon soon and gives me back my gym.

    4/20/2010

Part 2: So much for taking it easy. My training partner had to reschedule from Sunday afternoon to last night so I am a bit worried about hitting some of the events this close to Game Time.

    Highland Games Events Practice:

Braemar Stone (PR 27' 6") - 20' 6", 21' 8", 23' 1" -again using toe to trig method required for these upcoming games.

Open Stone (PR 36' 7") - R 27' 3", 29'4", 27' 2", 27' 10", 28' 5", 26' 10" -it just wasnt feeling right so I focused more on form than on applying power so although I went over the 3 throw rule the week of competition I was not using much energy.
    - L 26', 25' 7", 23' 10" -just to see if switching arms would matter

    Heavy Weight for Distance (PR 28' 4") - 21' 10", 22' 2", 23' 6", 18' 6", 20' 4" -not sure what I did to get 28ft last Game but I dont seem to be finding it at practice.

    Light Weight for Distance (PR 51' 8") - 48', 40' 4", 47' 2", 45' 2", 45' 7", 48' 3", 50', 53' 5", 45' 1" -took to many turns but I was dead set on breaking 50 feet.

    Heavy Scottish Hammer (PR 76' 4") - 65', 67' 9", 69'10", 70' 9" -I know I need spikes

Light Scottish Hammer (PR 92' 8") - 86' 1", 91' 7", foul, 87' 2", 90' 10" -I focused on putting the low point in my elipse at 2 o'clock and it helped. I feel like I have to hold back on my power because I am starting to come up off the ground.

Caber -16' 100lbs taper mid (PR NA) - skip for time - I really didnt want to skip this because I need to work on Caber but we didnt get started until 6pm so no time to load up the trailer and hitch it to the truck.

Sheaf (PR 28') - 24+, 22+, 22+ -just on eyeball estimate. I understand why my Sheaf has been flying at competitions now. My partners equipment is old school so he has us practicing with a #20lbs Sheaf versus the #16lbs Sheaf used in most of the competitions around here.

Weight for Height (PR 12'-0") - 11+, 12+, 11+ -these felt good so I think the Hip Snatches are helping. Also I added a bit of a twist on the release and I like the way it feels and plan on using it for the Game this weekend.

I was tired and a bit tight from practice last night but I still went to the gym this morning anyway.

    Workout: -5:00am

Warmup- light stretching to include some RC work

    1/2 mile warmup fast walk

Leg Press to Calf Raises to Obliques than a break 3 times:
    Leg Press 405*10, 495*10, 675*10
    - went back around and did a drop set of Leg Press 855*10 + 565*20 + 405*15
Calf Raises 135*20 for 3 sets
Oblique Side Bends 100s*20 for 3 sets

Farmers Walk 100s*50ft for 3 sets - more to test my wrist, it hurt real bad last night after I had that foul on hammer throws, it did fine with this exercise so I am no longer worried.

Inside to Outside Leg Machins than a break 3 times: -I know its a girl exercise and machine that doesnt see much action but I wanted to give them a try. Does anyone know what these are suppose to do?
Inside Abductor Leg Machine 80*15, 100*15 for 2 sets
Oustide Abductor Leg Machine 80*15, 100*15 for 2 sets

    Cool Down

    1/2 mile jog

    100 crunches, 100 lunges, 0 pushups

I have had a good few days of rest and have been gearing up for my HG this weekend. I will leave tomorrow morning and plan on winning the B Class this time! The competition is looking steep as some guys who were injured will be back, some unfamiliar names are in the mix, and this HG is part of a RenFest and they have some "local rules" that will make it more difficult. I keep going over technique in my head and just plan on focusing on what I know will work.

This game will be my 6th, since starting 11 months ago, and although I moved from Novice to C to B quickly I dont want to make a habit of showing up to compete B.

After I do well on Sunday and my numbers are up I will have one month to get ready for the next games that will be here on my "home turf" of Houston. It is important to me that I get my numbers up to where I can move up to A Class for the next games. And if everything goes right I will be showing up for Houston as an A at my one year mark in the sport. It is all business form here on out!

Huskybear: Thank you buddy! Good to see you. It has been non stop since Sunday so I have not had a chance to post, and honestly I just want to go to bed, but I promise a good report tomorrow on how the HG and everything else is going.

    To Quickly Summarize:
    (1) The Games went well and I had some steep competition placing 3rd.... but on the plus side still good enough to earn my spot in the A's for the HG here in Houston next month ( heck yeah!!! ).
    (2) I also had a series of really good job interviews yesterday and today ( double heck yeah!!! ).

Coke: Thank you I will let you all know what is next with both HG and work.

Everyone else who sent me PMs and texts and IMs thank you also !!!!

    Highland Games:
The GAME " Scarby RenFest "
    - B Class -
    Sunday 9am start time.

I had the family out for support and that was cool plus the crowds were real big again much like last time in San Antonio. It was also an average size turnout for athletes with about 3 dozen between A and B Class.

PreGame Fuel: Light breakfast at hotel, juice, protein shake, and 6hr energy drink.

Braemar Stone (PR 27' 6") - 22' 9" - 5th - using toe to trig method required for these games, not off to a great start, I guess some other people also practiced for local rules.

Open Stone (PR 36' 7") - 32' 5" - 5th - focusing on the form helped me do okay at this although I feel I have some more connectivity things to work on

Heavy Weight for Distance (PR 28' 4") - 26' 3.5" - 4th - I couldnt find the 28ft throw that I had last games, one of the A's who was watching me said I need to keep my shoulders and head up through the turn and release.

Light Weight for Distance (PR 51' 8") - 50' 4.5' - 4th - I was happy to keep this over 50 feet but I was going up against some real monsters and by this point in the Games I was starting to realize that my chances of a medal of any color were slipping away. By this point I normally have at least a top 3 finish so that was messing with me a bit.

Heavy Scottish Hammer (PR 76' 4") - 74' 5" - 1st - I was happy to take a first place finish on this and did so easily. Problem is Hammer is a good event for me and because of the field placement in the middle of the festival we couldnt also do Light Scottish Hammer so ultimitaly that would hurt my score as I likely would have taken that event also -but no excuses.

[U]Light Scottish Hammer (PR 92' 8") - not part of these games

BREAK FOR LUNCH - took the 45min to just chill out and think over what I needed to do to catch up. 6hr energy drink, protein shake and bar.

Caber -16' 90lbs taper mid (PR NA) - 10:15, drop, 10:15 -5th- PROUD - this caber might have been 90lbs at one point in its life but it had rained for the 3 days prior to the Games so I know this thing was more like 125. They used local rules for scoring which put me in 5th instead of in 3rd - it would not have made me throw any differently but I felt dumb wondering why my scores went up as 5th and than having to go ask the judges table why it wasnt 3rd place points.

    TEXAS CABER CHAMPIONSHIP
Caber -18' 110lbs taper mid (PR NA) - 30, 45, passed - 8th overall? - PROUD - this caber was open to anyone who wanted to go for it that had turned the first Caber A or B, Master or Pro, Spectator or Novice who was at the Games and feeling froggy. I felt that after my showing to this point I might as well try to win something and went for it. This Caber had also been outside for the above mentioned rain and I overheard a Class A competitior saying it was closer to 150lbs - I agree because it felt real heavy. I got two solid picks and partial turns on it, nothing past 90 degrees but that was still good by me as only 4 guys managed to turn it and I was the only B to get two picks and partials with it. This was considered its own Game and no points were added to scores but it was still fun. The winner got a over 2 foot tall trophy -looked liked a mini Stanley Cup.

Sheaf (PR 28') - 20' - 2nd - this was a #20lbs Sheaf new PR ( not to be confused with the #16lbs Sheaf I had sent flying in San Antonio.) The guy who beat me got it to 22' for the Bs but it was only down to 5 of us attempting it at that height and the rest were all As. The Sheaf itself broke at one point near 16 or 18 feet and they had to stop and do repairs on the bag which really slowed things down.

Weight for Height (PR 12'-0") - 12 - 1st - tie PR I knew by this point that I had a chance to move into 3rd because of some misses by the people in front of me on Caber and Sheaf.

Numbers 1 and 2 were within a point of each other and I turned out to be a King Maker by winning the last event the guy who took 2nd ended up getting 2nd overall versus first because of how close the points were. I was tied for 3rd place points but because I had more 1st place finishes local rules were no tie breaker was required and it went to me. So overall it was not the performance I was looking for but it was my best performance to date on a #20lbs Sheaf and a Heavy Caber, plus I managed to tie my old Weight for Height PR and was real close to getting 13 feet this time so I know it is in the tank for the next Games.

Last couple of days were not restful and filled with running around for interviews but things are going well. I needed the time off after the Games anyway to recharge.

    Cardio:

    Light Stretching
    3 mile walk
60 min of Soccer - I was happy with my ability to keep up, might not be losing much more weight but I am getting quicker, and a quick 245 is scary

Coke: Thanks man. I didnt have a breakthru day like I did last month but it was still a good Games. I will be going up against the As next month so I dont expect a top 3 finish but I do plan on showing them what I can do with both Hammers and Sheaf. My marks for those events are high A level already so I may be able to place well if those, plus some luck with Caber, come thru strong for me. I also continue to work on my form in the other events but those gains are slow and my short term goal is to just continue to improve connectivitiy up my lower and upper body strength and technique.

JSully: Thank you for the Bump! I try to post everything that I am doing to get ready for the Highland Games and am glad you find it entertaining, and hopefully even useful for when you gear up for one. Here in Texas HG has a strong following and the same is true for back in New England, although I hear it is not as well known in other places. It really is a great Sport and I hope more people get into HG because of my posts here !!!

I've got a HG coming up next saturday (5/8).. it'll be my first official.. we're pretty even on our numbers, but I've got some work to do on my form, I'm pretty sloppy. I finally got the right arc on my hammer but man you seem to be able to toss the **** out of that thing. Good stuff brother. I'm having trouble really transferring my leg drive into my open stone, I've just gotta keep practicing. What kind of weight are you using for open stone vs braemer stone?

I train with a 23lb stone for both open and braemer.. I can hit the open approx 33ft and the braemer about 29ft, but like I said, I'm not getting the leg drive transfer I need..

JSully: Good luck with your HG next Saturday. I wish I could say I know what I am doing right with the Hammer to pass it on to you but honestly I have just always been good with it since starting last year. I had a Master Class guy tell me a trick ( depending on your rotation its worth using on a last throw just to score but dont use it to early or others will copy it ) called the baseball throw. Basically you just put all of your speed and power into one turn and send it flying just like you were swinging at an imaginary baseball. If you end up using it let me know how it goes for you. I am also having big trouble with transfering my leg drive into the stones. Most of the time it seems like I am using only upper body for the movements. When I practice I use about six different stones my training partner has that range in weight and shape from 16 to 26 lbs. Sometimes I feel like the movement comes together for me and sometimes it just doesnt -but I hope to improve with more practice.

    Cardio:

    Light Stretching
    Boxing Drills
    Pull-ups 8, 6, 6, 4, 4
    Sprints

Basketball 4-on-4 - had some fun playing some pick up games for about 2 hours. It was crazy hot out and must have been over 90 with the humidity and heat index so I am sure I lost 3lbs or more in water weight, haha.
