    Possible Bench Progress? POSSIBLE RECORD BREAKING!

    I was wondering if some of the experienced benchers on the forum could help me out with this question.

    A little background first, I am about 198 lbs and am just starting to train for my first powerlifting competition in July. I currently have a raw paused bench of 325. I am natural an plan on staying natural, and had planned on doing my meets raw.

    The question is, by december 2009, saying i train specifically to get my bench up and i wore gear, is it feasible to put up 405?

    The reason i ask is because i was looking at the Ontario bench records and the 90kg Junior record is 402 lbs! I know I am just getting started into powerlifting and its a lot to jump in and chase a record, but its my last year as a junior and i think it would be pretty unreal if i reached that!

    Do you want to get up to 405 in a bench shirt? If so, with the proper shirt and training partners you could do that within your first few sessions. By December, in a shirt you could do much more if that was your goal and you were willing to spend the money and time trying different shirts to find what works best.


    Raw, you could definitely make a dent between 325 and 405, but that is a lot to add in 9 months. You never know though.
    Best Meet Lifts(Raw w/wraps):
    @165- 435 SQ 270 BE 560 DL.....1255 total
    @181- 535 SQ 300 BE 570 DL.....1400 total
    Best Meet Lifts(Multi-ply):
    @148- 575 SQ 315 BE 515 DL.....1400 total
    @165- 680 SQ 380 BE 540 DL.....1555 total
    @181- 700 SQ 375 BE 535 DL.....1605 total
    Best Gym Lifts(Raw w/wraps)
    545 SQ 305 BE 585 DL

    Seriously? The shirt would help that much.
    I am new to the sport as a whole, but unless its specified as raw then people can bench in shirts correct?

    The mens junior 90kg is the record i would be going for. its 182.5 kg.

    And just to make sure i am not to old, junior means the year one turns 23?

    I originally I thought you meant raw, and I thought it would be extremely tough for you to put 80lbs on your bench without gaining weight. But with some practice and knowledgeable training partners, you could easily get that record in a decent single-ply shirt (Rage-X, Fury/F6, Katana) way before Dec '09.

    So getting the record in a shirt is legit? I believe they use IPF rules.

    It looks like this is an IPF affiliate, so yeah single-ply IPF approved gear is allowed. Junior is 20-23 so you're good.

    Yes, the OPA uses IPF ruling. And depending on the judge, things can get strict. The right single ply can give you well over 100lbs.

    Junior: from 1 January in the calendar year he reaches 19 years and throughout the full calendar year in which he reaches 23 years.
    Current Stats:
    5'8" @ 204lbs

    2013 Goals (single ply):
    1700lbs total

    I'll say ... by Dec with the proper bench shirt training and the right shirt for your style you might be opening your first attempt at or higher than 402lbs

    It's still all completely guesswork at this point. Best thing to do is try it and see

    DO NOT BELIEVE THIS! The shirt does not GIVE you anything. It's a piece of equipment. You still have to earn that lift by learning the shirt and handling more weight than you are used to. It looks as though you have a solid raw base. Get a loose single ply shirt and train with someone with shirt experience if possible to learn the 'new groove'. Shirted benching is different from raw benching. Nothing is 'given'.

    So i guess the consensus is that with the right shirt and training i should be able to break that record! Thats awesome news and give me some concrete goals.

    I will ask Curd about it tomorrow, hopefully he helps me out because i think he could really help me! 411 is the Canadian record, maybe ill give that a shot too...

    Where in ottawa do you train right now?

    I live in Orleans, i used to train at Ottawa U but I finished in December. I am kind of between gyms, training at the YMCA right now, and looking for one that could help me progress. You?

    If you train properly, then yes. The best thing you can do is find some experienced powerlifters to train with and learn from.

    yes, get with other experienced lifters. I have seen guys with great raw bench numbers but horrible shirt numbers, you must remember these are two different lifts. shirted benching really emphasizes the triceps and lats. so it goes without saying you need to hunker down and train hard to get that 405.

    I am getting some help from two really experienced lifters, one of which is a bench specialist. I dont train with him all the time though. I think you are right though, first i need to find a gym that supports power lifting and training parters that can help me with everything. The family fitness facility im training at now won't even let me use boards.

    Hey incase anyone remembers this thread....

    Today i set the Ontario bench record with a lift of 185 kg (408 lbs)! WOOO.

    I plan on making a full thread when i get the vids in, but just thought i would update this old thread!

    Just fyi Dan, one of Canada's best powerlifters around (Al Mehan) is from Ottawa I think (80% sure he is). If you can hook up with him you'rre good to go.

    Hah! i was just gonna give some advice when i read to the end... Good job anyways, obviously it was possible.

    Now, if you're training IN Ottawa, you really should find a good club to train at. I dont remember all the Ottawa guys, but Barry Antoniow is from there i think, and he's pretty damn good bencher at 90kg.

    Funny, a guy i'm training was looking to break that exact record next year or so... he'll be royally pissed...

    I think al mehan is from calgary sadly, I met him in montreal last year. He's a monster, saw him squat 1017 lbs or something insane.

    Yeah i actually went up with iron works and barry this year, i train with curd hos for my benching.

    Haha well the record is still there, ill try not to raise it to much before i get to old!
