The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

I go to failure on all exercises that don't involve weights (e.g., pullups) and on the last set of all exercises.

So if your chets/tri day was
    Incline DB Press
    Flat Flyes
    Bench
    Skull Crushers
    Dips

You'd go to failure on all of that on the last set? And on the dips you'd go to failure one every set?

    Thx

I only go to failure on the following occasions:

    1) If I'm trying to set a new RM on an assistance exercise
    2) If I'm working with a given percentage or rep range on a "competition" lift and failure occurs in that range.

I'm not going to failure right now but I will be with my next routine. All my sets will be done to failure.

"I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord!"

yeah, I'm with horseman...I don't understand how you people can not go to failure, I mean if I'm doing three sets, 6 8 10, I pick a weight that I think I'm gonna fail on the 6th rep on, then a weight where I fail on the 8th, and then one where I fail on the 10th. I was under the impression this was the norm....I do forced reps on some exercises too, and other beyond failure techniques.

IMO, you just can't make great strength gains going to failure all the time. It's too hard on the CNS. You can still build a great physique - check out Sebi there - but for strength it will be a long haul.

when I was training as a bodybuilder, I always trained to failure. Now that I am training for power and strength as a powerlifter, I only train to failure by accident.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I've made some great gains (strength and size) with HIT which involves going to failure each set. Although it also involves probably a lot less volume that what most of you guys use...

Simple. I prefer to let the "a" in the force equation provide stimulation as opposed to the "m."

    interesting power

    he is referring to F = m * a

    Force = mass * acceleration

Power, so you believe hypertrophy come from acceleration induced stress?
on a general note, doesn't using the faster tempto result in more risk of injury? This would be due to the tendons being placed under much higher load/unit time as opposed to a slower pace

You can use the "m" as well and still failure is not a desireable thing.

Tension in the muscle is tension, whether it comes from heavy loading or heavy acceleration. So, yes.

Not necessarily. Assuming proper form and control is used, you shouldn't have any problems. In fact, it can actually work to strengthen the tendons in the long run.

For me failure is the product of overload and lengthening of TUT by slower tempo.

Longer TUT for the sake of TUT isn't better unless the mimimal threshold tension is accounted for.

The lenghtening TUT is not being employed for its own sake rather I am pairing it in tandem with overload. These lead to failure.
