The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Jeesh, Matt, 20 rep squats and then almost 20 rep benching. That's insane. Takes a lot of commitment. Your squats were probably a little off because of what you had done the other day with the 20 rep squats. Great stuff, dude.

    thanks Terry

Decided to start to track my food again. Last time I did it I was consistently at 3,500 cal and 200+g of protein. I haven't been eating well since Christmas and my weights down a bit. For me to maintain I need to be around 3,000 to 3,500 very consistently. To gain any appreciable amount of weight I have to hit 4,000+ every day.

Goals for this year include 242 bodyweight. To get there I'll need to add about 25lb.

    Today's stats:
    4,550 kcal
    220g protein
    255g fat
    320g carbs
Ideally the fat and protein would have been quite a bit higher and the carbs less.

One of the best things for me about tracking my food intake is that I can see if I need to really turn it up towards the end of the day. By midday I was at less than 500 kcal and knew I was going to have to make food a priority to get in the amount I wanted. I tracking it all with my Droid phone, which makes it a lot easier. Some foods I can just scan the barcode with the phone and it populates the program for me

I just got an app that tracks food through barcodes, loving it on my droid. I use myfitnesspal to keep track of calories, makes it real easy to scan a barcode and have a little button pop up asking if I want to add it, man I'm in love with this phone.

Good job at tracking your intake again. I didnt know you had to eat that much to just maintain. I guess you experimented with different macro splits and high fat worked the best for you?

I agree, takes a lot of the effort out of it and makes it way more convenient. The one I use if very similar to MyFitnessPal.

To gain weight I need to keep the carbs and fats pretty high. I've done keto diets before and my metabolism burns through carbs so quickly that I went into ketosis after just 2 days of no carbs. So anytime that want to drop weight I just cut bread, pasta and complex carbs. My dad, who's 62 is the same way, I dropped his calories to 3,000 a day and he lost 30lbs in 4 months. I have to get on him now about keeping his calories up

The down side is that so many carbs make me really bloated. Which is why I don't generally eat them that much. If left on my own and ate whatever I wanted it would probably be 40% fats, 40% protein and 20% carbs.

My (very) rough plan is no carbs until lunch and then to try and eat all my carbs in a 6 to 8 hour window. Basically I want to eat the minimum amount of carbs needed to gain weight. We'll see where that ends up being. My guess is between 200g and 250g per day.

    Started off good today:
Breakfast = 960 cal, 60g protein and <5g carbs (incidentals from meat, eggs, and cheese)

I cant even imagine how no carbs diets are beeing a carboholic. I just feel better with carbs in a diet. Although Ive been thinking about trying a more paleo style diet.

Keep up the good work StL

With a little effort I can stay below 50g carbs a day and feel absolutely fine. I've done Warrior Diet/Intermittent Fasting in the past and usually feel very good (after the first day or two of adjusting).

Paleo is a good idea but way to restrictive for me. I still like to eat crap on a semi-regular basis

That's cool that you are tracking your food. I just recently started eating clean, but I have not been tracking macros or anything. Just estimating on protein, eating whatever fruits and vegetables, and keeping carbs from breads and pasta low.

If I didn't have the Droid app I'd be doing exactly what you are. Otherwise it's just to tedious.

we'll see what happens tomorrow; I'm doing 180lb on squat for as many as possible (after 2 sets of 5). My best 20 repper at below parallel is 205 so we'll see what happens. Gotten a lot of food and some decent sleep the last few days...

I shall be doing high rep squats tonight as well...

4x10 and 1xAMAP (leaving 2-3 in the tank) with 230 pounds.

I feel your pain. I wish you luck. I know I'll need it :P

You are a high rep machine! Nice work. I'm glad to see you are tracking your food, no doubt that is going to make a huge difference... sounds like you have solid plan for your diet too. The 242 goal will be yours.

There's one from a month or so ago of me doing 205 x 20. It's kind of a pain in the ass to video so I only do it occasionally.

    Today's session:

    Squats
    185 x 5
    185 x 5
    185 x 20 RPE-10
These were very hard. Had a little twinge in my hip during the second set but nothing during the third one and it still feels fine now 3 hours later. I did go back to belt and sleeves (didn't use the straps though, so basically 1ply convicts) for working sets. Had an achey knee all weekend and didn't want it to progress.

    OH Press
    95 x 5
    95 x 5
    95 x 10 RPE-hard 8 (added belt)
Never really used a belt for OH Press before, not sure if it actually made any difference but did feel a bit more stable.

    Neck Harness
    4 sets of 15

Didn't have time for the chins. Been very busy with work and also getting bids and work done on my house.

Food intake up to right now:
    2,000 calories and 112g protein

    Yesterday I hit:
    4,100 calories, 240g protein, 270g fat and 170g carbs
This is pretty much what I'm shooting for every day.
