The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Deadlifts
    195 x 3
    220 x 3
    250 x 3
Apparently my body has forgotten how to deadlift Not one of these reps felt good. Everything felt heavy and my back was doing the majority of the work. I did tape it most of them looked like rounded back stiff-leg deads

I'm going to have to deadlift a lot more frequently if I expect to improve my form. So the plan has been adjusted so that I'll just be hitting reps on my deadlift day and then doing a relatively easy weight on squat days as squat assistance. I'm also going to do everything the same style from now on so that I can try to develop a groove.

    Ghetto GHRs
    blue band assist x 8
    blue band assist x 8
    blue band assist x 8
Felt good and actually made my lower back feel a little better as well

    Band Pull Throughs
    blue band x 20
blue and purple band x 20

    Uneven Bar Side Bends
for these I put a barbell on my shoulders have weight on one side only and then do a side bends (Thanks for the idea Jesse).
    bar + 10lbs on one side x 8 x 3 sets for each side
a lot harder than I thought they'd be

Pretty quick session and even though I didn't do anything impressive with the weights I feel like I learned something.

Good work Matt! It's tough when you don't know when you can lift, especially when you have a baby on the way. You still got some great work in and you learned some things to incorporate, so it was still a positive session. Keep up the good work!

The deadlifts definitely take regular practice. Impressive session for the back and core.

Let me edit out the junk and see if I can get that up around lunch.

edit: looked at the footage on my PC and its at a weird angle and very dark. I'm about 90% sure I have the bar too far in front of me (which is what was happened a few months ago when I uploaded some videos).

I have an irrational concern about the bar scraping my shins for some reason. To help I made some shin protectors out of an old wetsuit

Will test it out on Friday.

A tall guy like you shouldn't have any issues with deadlifting...well its really more about long arms and long legs but I am sure you have both. Post the video if you can and I will take a look and give you feedback.

Good job for getting in there and getting it done, Matt. The more you do it, the more your body learns the motor pattern. It will probably come back quickly since you've done it a lot before. As others have said, it's tough when you don't know when you can lift.

Thanks for the encouragement Jesse. I'm still messing with the video from yesterday trying to lighten it up and edit it down to size. No matter what I'll be videoing friday's sets.

Still some good deadlifts bro. Uneven bar sidebends make me feel like I'm gonna puke. You got a strong core if you did that **** with 55 lbs on one side of the bar! They are hard for sure. You know, I am finding that the keys to any lift is to identify the component that is weak and make it strong and find where YOUR leverages are strongest...even if this means the bar is gonna scrape your shins. Some people just have natural technique that gives them good leverage on the bar. Others have to work to find that leverage. When you find it though, things will move quick. Keep messing with it. You know the basics and now just play around with different hip heights, grip widths, foot stances and bar placement. There is a magic combination for your body, trust me. It may require you to "violate" some "rules" that a lot of people have put out there on "how to" do the lift. We are all different though.

Thanks Kiaran. BTW, it was just 10lb on one side. I didn't really think about how to post that. I think I need to do it a little differently next time

Nice pulling! Definitely get the vid up if you can, DL is one of the few lifts I am actually pretty good at coaching so hopefully I can help a bit.

    Bench Press
    140 x 3
    160 x 3
    180 x 9 (RPE-10) est. max 233
very happy about this, my last bench session was 2 weeks ago and I got 170 x 11. So I haven't lost anything. This is also my highest estimated max in 5 months and 2nd best all time.

    Chins
    bw x 3
    bw x 2
    bw x 3
didn't rest nearly as much as usual, also pretty spent from bench. Not a good showing but I'm not terribly concerned about it either.

    Dips
    bw x 5
    bw x 2.5
same as chins, very little rest; I was also interrupted by the handyman right before my next set so I had to call it a day there.

Did some band work at my desk:

    Band Pull Aparts
    choked purple bands x 20 x 2

    Band Face Pulls
    doubled red band x 20 x 2

    Band Triceps Extension
    red x 33

    Good session

So far so good. May have to change some of my work from home days around but shouldn't be too bad.
