The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Velcro lol... ask your wife if you can wear them on a date with her and then she may find a new appreciation for them staying on you at home. Very strong OHP and deads Matt, 300x5 is no joke at all! Great work!

Thanks Terry, felt good to get something done. Probably should have done more but something is better than nothing

Its funny you said that about the shoes, my daughter actually said that maybe they could be date shoes because they're so clean and I should wear them the next time Mommy and I go out on a date

Another 3/5/1 er....I'm starting to feel like the minority around here sticking to the basic traditional 5/3/1. Haha.

Congrats on the PR's man.. We're right at the same spot with the OHP's.

Enjoy the rest of the holidays, and come back and smash some *****in weights in 2011!!!

Lunch Workout at the Office's Fitness Center

    only listing work set:

    Lat Pulldowns
    130 x 12 (RPE-8)

    Machine OH Press
    95 x 10 (RPE-9)

    Machine Preacher Curls
    135 x 8 (RPE-8)

    Machine Triceps
    80 x 20 (RPE-8)

I really don't like using the machines here but at least it gets me out of the cubicle and makes tonights work (bench) a lot more focused.

Not sure if I should be amused or insulted

    Here are two good articles:
    http://www.reactivetrainingsystems.c...s/49-chapter-2
    and
    http://www.reactivetrainingsystems.c...your-rpe-chart

Basically for assistance work I want to always keep several reps left in the tank. Looking at the RPEs I overdid it a bit with Machine OH Press but everything else was fine.

    For me specifically:
RPE-10 is a true max effort nothing left in the tank at all
    RPE-9 had 1 rep left
RPE-8 had anywhere from 2 to 4 reps left
RPE-7 had 4+ reps left and good speed throughout (bar didn't slow down at any point)
    RPE-6 speed work

I occassionally put "hard" or "easy" or use a ".5" to get a little more detail on it.

    For example:
An RPE-8.5 or hard 8 would mean 2 reps left
An RPE-9.5 or hard 9 would mean no reps left but probably could have put a few more pounds on the bar.

Very helpful in monitoring effort and picking what weights to use in the future.

I also use it as a mental tool because I can see that I was able to handle a specific weight for a specific number of reps relatively easily (or not). This was very helpful for deadlifts this last cycle. I saw that I did 330 for reps and realized that I could do a lot more than that and that I have a tendency to psyche myself out for big lifts.

    Hope this helps.

Training looks great, Matt. Super job on getting two PR's the other day. I laughed at the velcro shoes thing and your wife's thoughts. My wfie would think the exact same thing.

I think we need a velcro shoes club, they were cool 25 years ago! Both my daughters wear velcro shoes and I think they're pretty damn cute

    PM Session in the Garage

My head wasn't quite in it but good session.

    Bench
    bar x 5
    115 x 5
155 x 3 (was supposed to do 3) my first mistake on reps of the night
    180 x 3
200 x 1 (second screw up, thought I was doing singles with 200 but this was supposed to be my final 3's set)
    200 x 5 PR for 5RM (+5lb)

    drop set
    165 x 5

My head was all over the place during this session but very happy with the rep PR. I did 195 x 5 about 6 weeks ago so I'll definitely take 5lb in 6 weeks.
