The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    ME Lower
BWidn't dare weigh myself. Haven't been able to eat shit the past 3 days upset stomach.

Deadlift-So my deadlift is my shit. Always been my worst lift and a struggle to progress on. Its only gone up 15lbs since March. I've only been doing singles for max effort. Been probably about 7 months since I did anything besides a single for ME. The plan is to get in some heavy triples and fives for a few months then re-test my 1rm.

Noticeably bigger in the videos and pics. For your deadlift, have you messed around with maybe moving your legs out a little wider, opening them up a little more, dropping your hips slightly, and slightly moving your hands in?

Haven't played around with going much wider. I have little room to move them out as is without smashing a toe. Half of my hand is already on the smooth of the bar. If I drop my hips lower than what they already are I lose power. I think I just need more speed and strength.

When I pulled my PR 545 is when I experimented with raising my hips a little higher than usual. Helped me off the floor a ton.

Do you ever throw in conventional pulls? It might be worth doing some conventional rack pulls or even throwing in a rotation of conventional pulling if it has been a while. Whenever I have been pulling my semi-sumo stance for a while I go back to conventional for a bit and it always helps.

I throw in some SLDL Conv every month but thats about it. It couldn't hurt to give some conv pulling a shot from time to time its just takes a long time for me to recover from.

I like your form, hips high is better (IMO).

You may be able to turn the feet out slightly and get the hips closer though as Joey said.

REally looking solid in the pics, well done!!

I don't pull sumo that much and I haven't since my surgery. So what i'm about to mention is just from my experience and what I feel works best for me....

I always focus on keeping my head up and chest high, it doesn't matter if I pull with my hips low or high. I also try to focus the start of the lift by spreading the floor apart, pushing out on my knees, and using more leg drive then back. Sometimes it get's harder to do with heavier weight. In that video where you pulled 545, your chest and head were down and your upper back was rounded. Being in this kind of position can be very tough when trying to lockout those heavy lifts. I know that was a PR for you so your doing something right. I think with you it's just coming down to technique and IMO sumo can be very technical. Remember, I don't have much experience with pulling sumo, these are just some things that work for me.

Here is a video of Andrey Belyaev, IMO one of the BEST sumo pullers in the world.
    Video

Clint Smith, another great sumo puller from Team Samson here in Florida. He is pretty close to pulling 800.

I have to admit, I'm not sure I want to see your deadlift shoot up like your squat. I don't know If my ego could take getting crushed by you in deads too. That being said I think Nick and Brian are totally right. If you can get your hips a little closer to the bar by pointing your toes out a little more like Nick said it would be easier to stay upright like Brian said, which should give you much better leverages. Honestly as strong as you are in your legs and core I'm surprised you aren't crushing 600 for reps.

Those videos Brian posted illustrate it pretty good. Those lifters get pop off the floor, even with heavier weights. sumo is really technical, as mentioned. You just have to mess around with what works best. I feel you have a lot more in you now already once you find the right groove.

If I start hips that low my pull is much less, I use plenty of back.

IMO, the hips low looked a lot better. You kept your head and chest up, it looked like you were using more leg drive and it was fast. The hips high, not so much. You were looking down and your chest was down, you were using all back and it was slow. It also looked like you jerked it off the ground to get moving, which can lead to a bad bicep tear. So if I were you, I would go with the hips lower.
