The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Starting Strength

Well, I think i am going to start the Starting Strength program. Thought that I wouldnt have to but i think i may have too. My bench press hasnt gone up for 2 months. Here are my lifts:

    Bench press: 135x5
    Deadlift: 155x5
    Squat: 135x5 (Machine with pulleys)

Instead of the regular squat in SS can i do dumbell squats? Or use dumbells while doing lunges?

Also do do you have to stay strict with SS, for example can you do some more accessory work such as bicep curls? Can you do push ups/pull ups/dips while also during SS?

I weigh 155 pounds (last monday weigh in), and at 6'0".

    Is SS right for me?

    Answers would be great

    dude, read this sticky:

    http://www.wannabebig.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=124795

Barbell squats are MUCH better. I had pretty good results with starting strength and didn't do any accessory lifts. Just stick to the program and eat. Eating is just as important as lifting.

And yes starting strength would fit you perfectly.

If you don't have a squat rack at your gym you have a couple options:
    1) Go to a gym with a squat rack or power rack (This is the best option).
    2) Clean the bar onto your shoulders and do front squats (These aren't as good a back squats, but are better than a machine).

Also, stick to the program as closely as possible. It's not the end of the world if you add a couple sets of curls or something, but no more than a couple sets.

You can't do SS without barbell back squatting.

Haha very nice. I have another question, doing the 3x5 on Work Out A, do you not change the weight between sets? Do you just use the same weight for every set?

Buy then read the book. Seriously. It will be one of the best investments you can make for yourself and your training.

Yes, it messes up your form horribly. Don't ever use that machine again. Don't even look at it. Not even in the mirror.

so do front squats or what? i was thinking that if i had 2 people lift the bar up for me, i could get in form, then just squat without a rack? That could be dangerous though?

I have been doing SS now for IDK 3 months? and I actually just finished reading the book, and I learned a lot from it. http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Stren...4115877&sr=8-1 Definitely worth the 30 bucks.
I don't think its worth doing SS if you cant do squats the way the programed is designed.
I had similar numbers to you and a similar weight at 5'9" 6 months ago when I started and my numbers are as follows... Bench 205x3x5, squat 260x3x5, deadlift 305x5, clean 155 x5x3, and press 125x3x5.

If you start doing SS, at first you should be able to do a few extra lifts, pullups, dips, and rows are probably good. After a month or so you will realise that you really dont need the extra lifts right now and you probably drop them... this is all talked about in the book.

Most of all I would find a gym that will allow you to do all the lifts needed for SS and start going there. You dont need much, I started doing SS with 100 bucks worth of gear on CL, and have been slowly adding to my home gym as needed.

It wouldnt be a bad idea to pick up Practical Programming while you are at it. Both books are, in my opinion, the best out there and will put you, informatively speaking, ahead of 90% of the lifting community.
