No. The program is written the way it is for a reason. Are you really resting if you are doing a set a bench? If you set up correctly, stay tight, get an arch, and really squeeze the bar, the bench press turns into a whole body exercise as well. That doesn't sound like a very good way to be rested for my next set of heavy squats.
The whole point of Starting Strength is to do heavy sets of 5 with big barbell exercises and add weight regularly. You're not going to be optimally rested if you are doing other exercises during your squat rest periods.
