The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Peary Rader wrote about that many moons ago and Poulquin also had his own take on it, so don't laugh too hard. Supposedly it works as long as you aren't a newbie and if you do it correctly you are supposed to be able to keep about half of it over the long run. The eating is supposed to be crucial to its success. I want to try it some day when I reach advanced levels.

It's called overcompensation and it has to do with glycogen replacement. It's meant to shock the muscle after it has become stagnant through years of compound exercises. It's not really meant for guys that do arm specialization on a regular basis. It allows a lagging muscle group to catch up with the rest of the body.

I can see how that would work if used extremely sparingly..
    ain't nuttin but a peanut.

You will have gotten stronger when the weight that feels heavy is actually heavier than the weight that feels heavy now. Then the weight that feels heavy now will be a warmup for the weight that feels heavy then. But the weight will always feel heavy or you're not lifting enough weight. Clear? -Rippetoe

LOL this is what I was going to say. Flex definitely did not come up with this stuff.

As Off Road said, it's been around for quite some time, it's just never been popularized much because of the practacality aspect of doing a training session this long. Most people don't have the endurance for something like that.

Is it going to add an instant inch onto your arms? Well obviously there is going to be a pretty wide variance within people's results. Some will get the inch, some less. It's also not the kind of thing you can do every week and see results.

Let me restate this because I know that every newbie will be running to their dumbbells after reading this...

In order to get the full benefit from this routine, you need to be fairly well along in your development and you can't be somebody that directly trains their arms on a regular basis.

so is this something that actually adds muscle mass to your arm, or does it just give you a pump for a while, making you appear to have bigger arms?

It adds mass in the form of energy storage, just like doing volume and isolation exercises. Unfortunately, that type of mass isn't as long lived as adding actual muscle fiber. But, a big percentage of it can be kept as long as the person keeps working out. Do a search, it's been covered on here many times.

I read the Polquin version of this article some years back, its basically pumping the crap out of your arms then super compensating with glycogen so your arms will inflate and "re-up" with glycogen and you can gain an inch technically but dont workout for two days you will drop below that inch gain

That seems completely insane. Reminds me a bit of what Arthur Jones would do when in the early stages of promoting his Nautilus line of equipment. Have well-known bodybuilder/lifter come in. Have him do a circuit session right away. Have him not train at all for a few days. Have him retest on same movements, watch him be amazed at how much bigger and stronger he was.

so since it's glycogen and not muscle that's being added to your arms, it's essentially like dead weight? solely for aesthetic value?
how much weight would you gain overnight doing this, a pound or two?

A pound or two? On your arms? We are only talking an inch here, on a pretty small muscle group.
And the gains don't happen over night. It's over three days I believe.

Could this explain why I look smaller than 180lb guys but I weigh 230?

Just wondering if training for strength tends to build denser muscle....

Yes. High rep work tends to build up the energy reserves (glycogen) in the muscle and gives it that "fluffy" look. Low rep work tends to build the actual muscle tissue. Of course there is overlap and that's a simplistic view of things.

You're 50 lbs heavier than guys who look bigger than you? Ya sure it's not a little bit in your head? I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit.

You could look smaller because you have more bodyfat. Lower bodyfat percentages make you appear bigger.
