I've done probably 14 meets since I started powerlifting back in 2005, but this was only the second full power and the first all raw meet I had done (most I've done were push/pull or deadlift only) as well as the first time I'd competed in USAPL. It was the 2010 USAPL Missouri State/Ozark Open meet in St. Louis, MO, on March 13th. Rick Fowler did a great job of putting on the meet and it went very smoothly despite the fact there were two separate platforms of lifting going on simultaneously! There were 105 lifters, about 55 of which were lifting raw. There were two teams entered, one from Arkansas and my own team, Illini Powerlifting. We brought 10 lifters and almost everybody had a great day and set PR's. My team set 16 Illinois State records and broke 6 American records.
Here's how my lifting went:
Ryan- Raw 220 Open Men
Squat: 413, 440 (state record for 5 minutes), 457Miss
Bench: 286, 297, 308 (state record)
Deadlift: 480, 501, 529
I wasn't sure how I was going to do as I had had an upper respiratory infection up until only a day or two before and had actually even missed Monday and Tuesday off work because of it, but I was feeling mostly better by Saturday so I just thought I'd see how it went. I was hoping before the meet to go something like 452/308/512 and total between 1,250-1,280. I weighed in at a light for my class 207lbs. I knew I would have the advantage if it came down to bodyweight. There were 4 other competitors in my class that I would be lifting against for a total of 5 in the Raw 220 Open Men's class.
Squats were first up. I wasn't sure how it was going to go as I had been having some pain in and around my right IT band and hip area for the past week. Warmups felt pretty good, though and my last warmup with 390 went up really fast. 413 was my opener and it went up super fast. I got very deep on it, as well (I have vid I haven't posted up yet). I called for 440.7 on my second attempt and again I went deep but it went up without issue. That was good for an IL state raw record (it had been 429). I called for 457 on my third attempt, but I think I sunk it too deep and just didn't have enough to get it out of the hole. If I'd cut it shorter I know I would have gotten it. Anyway, I was 2 for 3 and happy at that point although not hitting that 3rd squat would haunt me later.
On to bench. I had not lifted in USAPL before I was aware of their rule that the bar must be motionless on the chest before they give you the press command, thus I was fairly conservative on choosing my attempts. I opened with an easy 286lbs and it flew up. That was good for an IL state raw record (it had been 264). On my second attempt I went up 5 kilos to make it 297lbs. It was easy again and I broke my own state record. I was feeling good and confident and wanted to hit a number that would put me even with my main competition going into the DL (he missed his 2nd and 3rd attempts on bench but had beaten me in squat by 20 kilos). I asked for 308 on the bar. I felt good about it because I had hit 320 in training but that was touch and go - no pause. I should not have been worried as the 308 went up smoothly. I might have had 314 in me that day but I was happy with going 3 for 3 on bench and being in a tie with my main competitor going into the DL.
I knew I wasn't going to win my class as there was another guy who had a monster squat and bench and was well ahead of myself and the others, but I was neck and neck for 2nd place with another lifter who's bench record I broke and who's squat record I had briefly broke before he took it back from me a few minutes later. My raw deadlift was not good compared to my suited DL (try 100lbs less!) as I had only been training it raw for about 2 months and had been lifting in the suit for years. However, I was feeling amped up and thought I could at least give my 507 raw DL PR a good run.
On my first attempt I caleld for 480 and it went up faster than I could ever remember. I had planned for going 501 on my second but the 480 felt so good I went for 507. The 507 was frickin' nothin', too. I was shocked and knew I had a lot more in me. I looked at the board and saw that my main competitor had done 523 on hi second attempt. I caleld for 2.5kg more on my 3rd attempt (529) and hoped I could get it and that he would miss his 3rd attempt. This was fun! I had never been in a close battle with anyone before, and this was for the Illinois Raw state record total! After watching my wife lift on the other platform (and just miss an American record with her last deadlifts), I prepared to go for the 529 pull. It came up almost as fast as the 507 had! I might have had 540 in me that day. So then I had to wait to see what my competitor was going to do. He had originally called for 551 for his last pull but after seeing me make mine he changed it to only 534, or 2.5kg above what I did. He struggled but he got it.
So I lost to him by only about 5 lbs on my total. I congratulated him and said "Nicely done." and had to settle for 3rd place, but just barely. Turns out the guy that won was not a good deadlifter so we weren't that far behind him, either. But I was kicking myself for not hitting my 3rd attempt squat. If I had I would have likely been in good position to get second place and secure the state record for total, as well. But at least I qualified for USAPL Raw Nationals in Denver in July and can try to break a 1,300 raw total there. I should hopefuly have a 550+ raw deadlift by then which will help.
BTW, Illini Powerlifting got 2nd place for the team but got a nice banner to show for it. My wife broke the American Raw Record for deadlift in 148 Open Women (weighing only 134lbs!) and could have broken the American record total if she had hit her 2nd or 3rd deadlift. She was just too tired and also not feeling well but I know she can do it at Raw Nats.
