I want to extend my wifi range for my laptop

There is a library 0.3 miles from where I work that puts out a free wifi signal I would like to drop down on. There may be even something closer in the neighborhoods. Is there anything I can hook up to my laptop to generate this kind of output?

Basically you want an external antenna setup. I'm sure there are tons to choose from.

I've read you can make an antenna out of an ethernet cable, a cell phone, a bowl and some aluminum foil.

    1) Wrap the bowl with aluminum foil.
    2) Plug the ethernet cable into your computer.
    3) Wrap the free end of the ethernet cable around the cell phone.
    4) Put the cell phone inside the aluminum foil-lined bowl.

I've tried it before but didn't have much luck. Let me know if it works.
