    Get off the Smith and start squatting in a squat rack. Pick a weight you can comfortably use and go from there.

    The Smith has it's place in the gym imho, but you're never going to strengthen your stabilizers as much as you will when you begin training in the power/squat rack. As you progress in weight, you'll be able to handle heavier and heavier loads. Most people that I know don't use spotters for squats -- but then again, most people I know don't attempt 600+ on squats every day.

    What Stash said.

    Use a proper squat rack or a power rack, and if you can't make it back up, just sit down (carefully) and the safety bars will catch the barbell.

    Another great variation of Squats are ATF Squats. I've been progressing nicely with them.

    OK - sorry to sound so ignorant but I see ATF all over this board but have no idea what it means. Little help?

    "butt to floor"

    butt = a**

    if you can't do ATF, at least go to parallel.

    Is it possible for one without any serious physiological deficiency to simply be incapable of such a movement (ATF)? Not flexible enough, because of general inactivity? I find it hard enough to go just to parallel.. I actually need weight to "drive" me to parallel, unless I'm holding on to something for balance.

    EDIT: for clarification, I mean parallel bodyweight squats are more difficult for me than, say, parallel with a bar, which I can do easily.

    Squats are supposed to be squats, and nothing more. You're supposed to choose how you want to do them...and what works best for you. There's no "standard have-to-do" exercise.

    then go lighter on the normal rack. i have back problems too, haven't got a spotter, and made the switch from the smith (what the all-knowing trainer taught me to use) to a squat rack after getting educated here.

    start light, increase gradually, don't slap on too much weight, know when *not* to squeeze out another rep.

    Yeah...nothing like some bozo insisting on giving you the "hug" spot when you neither need nor want it. The last guy who spotted me on squats deliberately grabbed my boobs when I was down in the hole. I could have KILLED him.

    I thought of you, tholian, when I read this thread. I'd be looking for a chance to accidentally on purpose drop a loaded barbell on his foot for that one.

    I do. The bar hurts my neck.

    Some people think I`m a candy-a$$, but I think big bruises over my neck and back detract from my beautiousness.

    I don't use the pads. I'm more comfortable with the bar on my traps. If I get any bruises, they just make me look tougher.
