The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

The Hardcore Twelve by Steve Colescott

This was an article Steve wrote a while back (November 28th, 2009). He referenced it in our latest article (Rag on the Mags #2 - Flex: July 2010) so we decided to publish it so it can be linked to easily on WBB

    Enjoy!

The sports of powerlifting, bodybuilding and strongman competition seem to attract a colorful crowd. With literally millions of participants and a monthly carousel of athletes being profiled in each of the multitude of monthly muscle and strength magazines, a handful of athletes have stood out over the past three decades.

They stand out for their trailblazing lifting, their unique personalities and their dominance of the competition. All were driven by their hunger to be bigger and stronger. Most importantly, each of these iron icons stands out because of their ability to inspire us. For this reason, we call them… THE HARDCORE 12!

Some background info on this article:

I started writing "The Hardcore Twelve" eleven years ago for the seventh issue my old hardcore magazine Peak Training Journal. The mag went out of business before it ever saw print.

I like the title because it is strong, leads the reader in wondering what it is about but yeah... it sorta does sound like the title of a porn flick.

The uncompleted manuscript sat on an old Mac laptop that had overheated for about a decade. A year ago, I spent two-grand to have as much data retrieved from that hard drive as possible. The basic outline of "The Hardcore Twelve" and the main logo graphic were among the things retrieved. I only made one adjustment to the list. In the original, then-one time Olympia winner Ronnie Coleman was listed among the Honorable Mentions with the comments, "only time will tell if Big Ronnie rises to the Hardcore Twelve..." He took the place of Casey Viator who then became an Honorable Mention (which still 'aint shabby).

While interviewing Mike Francois for comments for his segment, Francois very sincerely told me that he was deeply honored to be included. He also said that being thought of that way by fans of the sport meant more to him than the titles he has won.

Francois also implored me to include Andreas Munzer (who received an Honorable Mention) because he felt that his late friend never received the accolades he deserved for his extremely intense training and dedication to the sport.

I found out about the Flex article that was startlingly similar to this (referenced in the review http://www.wannabebig.com/training/r...lex-july-2010/) from John DeFendis (included in both lists), who I have remained friends with since the time he wrote a regular column for Peak.

    Just a little random, behind-the-scenes...

Knowing about and learning from these guys is simply awesome inspiration.

Ok, we'll never match their feats, but we can take a look from their methods and mindset and... well.... it's just damn cool to read about
