No, you cannot do it. Smith Machines are horrible for you if you use them to squat. You hamstrings are largely deactivated because of the goofy position you put yourself in. You need to either clean the weight up and then press it back to your shoulders, or maybe try a front squat variation until you can find another gym.
Most people pray for a lighter load in life...ever thought of praying for a stronger back?

Goals as of 2/08/11 (current) goal:
    Squat: (505) 535, Deadlift: (475) 500, Bench: (325) 350 Total: 1305 (1385)
    BW: 225 as of 02/01/2011 Goal: 205 by May 1, 2011

NO. No. no. In fact, Rippetoe explicitly says this in the book.

I would look for alternatives to the Smith Machine...The easiest is to find a new gym or buy a rack and bench for home use. Dr. Ken Liestner, when forced to, used two saw horses and started his squats from the bottom position. Where there's a will, there's a way.

I'd piss on a smith's machine, but I wouldn't do anything else on it. Don't neglect those trusty stabilizers. Cancel your membership at Planet Fitness and go to a gym that wants its members to succeed.

It's not the routine, Starting Strength is among the best, it's the Smith Machine that I don't like. The Smith Machine doesn't activate the muscles in the same manner as free weights, and the forced plane of movement can cause injuries.

Nearly every gym these days has a Smith. Doesn't mean you have to USE it.
