How does following a slimming diet and suffering from starvation differ?

is it just the obvious that, following a slimming diet is healthy as it includes all the important nutrients and advises exercise whereas starvation is lack of food, which causes serious health problems.

This is a science, biology Q, i need help summing up a detailed but yet simple answer. Thanks in advance

You've pretty much answered your own question in your first sentence.

While they both "reduce" body weight they both also work very differently. Your first sentence pretty much sums it up. Starving your body forces it to do things that it wouldn't do on a diet where you are still eating but less then your maintenance calories. Most notably starvation will cause your body to lose significantly more muscle mass.
