The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    WEEK 17
    Day 1
    Weight 181.8

Warm-up: dynamic stretching, and foam rolling

    4" Deficit deadlift
    135x5
    225x5
    315x3
    365x3
    *belt*
    405x1
    425x1 slow as shit

    Bulgarian Split Squat
    135x8
    155x8
    175x8
    175x8

    SLDL
    275x8 <-----[PR]
    275x8
    275x8

    Hypers
    +45x8
    +45x10
    +45x12

    Seated Calves 4x10 @ 145, 145, 145, 145

Not bad for deficit pulls after a week off. My last one was just bad. I had one of our trainers watch my SLDLs, and we corrected some form issues. Doing Bulgarian split squats was a challenge at first finding my balance, but I managed at the end. Fuck smith machines, I will never do split squats on a machine again. Still trying to find an alternative to hack squats...I really don't want to lunge twice in a session.

Looks like a solid first session. Big SLDLs.

If you're looking for a specific program you might want to consider Texas Method at your level of development. You can make progress quicker than with 5/3/1 (weekly instead of monthly) and it's relatively flexible. There's a good thread somewhere comparing the two but it comes down to your recovery abilities and experience. Just manipulate volume and intensity on Monday and Friday in appropriate ways and you'll keep gaining strength.

Alternatively, as you've got a good idea of what you're doing, why don't you make your own program? It could be an interesting experiment to find out what works for you, and interesting for us to read and follow along.

Wow man solid Deadlift! God I suck at defecits lol.

Here is an article you may find helpful

    http://articles.elitefts.com/article...ifting-year-1/

If you want to compete I'd bulk up to 190ish if you have a 24 hour weight in and lose the 9 or so lbs from water manipulation.

Congrats on the SLDL PR. Once you get around 300 they REALLY kill. (I've done 335 before - a few years ago )

How about Zercher Squats? Tried and True. Old school mate. Just saying..........

Just don't do them in a Smith Machine.

JC: Thanks. I was feelin' it after those SLDLs. I have already been experimenting with some main lift alternations (deadlifts and squats) but I wouldn't mind making alterations to a new program after a while. However, today's hypers were just overkill. LOL.

Thomas: Defecits are brutal. Thanks for the link...I'll check it after I get off work. 190, eh? Gonna be a world of firsts

Terry: Thank you, sir. Means a lot. As far as my quads are concerned...reminds me of the sizing fail on my part from Elite FTS. Waited an extra long time for knee sleeves that I thought would fit me, they are a bit loose. Brutal. Haha.

Bulk Boy: I feel like a Zercher squat is really just an annoying front squat variant. Yeah, I'm done with the smith machine. I suppose I was just doing it to compensate for balance, but I'm set now. Perhaps I might just get 2 rounds of lunges in one day. Yikes.

    ====UPDATE====
Gonna be exchanging my elite fts 4x Super heavy knee sleeves for 3x. They fit a bit lose...need em tight. My 80 cm wrist wraps are wonderful.

You are squatting 3 times the amount that I am... wow!!

Glad that I'm not the only one that likes T-Bar Rows... I got ripped on for doing them, but I think they are a good exercise..

    Good job..

I love me some CSR w/ dumbbells on an incline bench.

grats on the RDL PR. I agree with JC, make your own program to suit your needs, your weaknesses and your alotted time frame.

correct me if I'm wrong city, but based on the weight scheme it looks like it's a barbell.

Wouldn't be tough to do. Unrack the weight, throw a leg on a bench behind you, position your front leg and go.

Eric: You can be squatting this much in time. Keep pushing! I like a form of chest-supported row...I could be doing bent over rows, but I don't. No big deal. You should try and video tape yourself with some of your lifts to perhaps receive critique on form.

Terry: Thanks, sir. I hope one day it will catch up with my lower.

Sully: CSR? I am slowly converting my current program to a whole 'nother monster. If there is stuff I should/shouldn't be doing, just say so after seeing my training sessions.

Patz: Barbell. Load weights, put my leg on a bench and go to town.

    Nick: Yes...deficits and I have a love/hate relationship.

Got a bit excited with my front squats after hitting 295 for three. Missed twice on 315. The first time because some fucker thought it would be cool to spot me with double underhooks and in the process, bumped me forward and tossed me off balance. The second time, I just failed at mid ascent. Still, hit a PR and repped that fucker out. Yesterday, I returned my 4XL super heavy knee sleeves to Elite FTS for a smaller size. Hopefully, the new size will work.

    sweet front squats, great job.

CSR = chest supported row, acronyms FTW!! lol

I'm personally not a fan of jump squats, hard on the knees and very little carry over. DE squats + box jumps/jumping lunges/misc plyos are just as useful IMO.

    what are one legged SHELCs?

    more acronyms FTW!

don't mean to be a dick. If the exercise works for you then have at it, but it sounds like you could get better benefits elsewhere. My two pennies.

greemah: It was, I failed to highlight it. Thanks for reminding me.

Sully: Yeah as I increase in weight, I start to consider that more and more. I think I will just DE squat or something. SHELC = supine hip extension/ leg curl...basically take a balance ball, put your feet at the apex, trust hips up, and curl in the legs...but I do it with one leg as two was really damn easy. In short, it's a one-legged hamstring curl on a fitness ball.

Sully (2): Yeah, GHR is now a possibility at my university gym; we used to not have one. I need to watch more GM videos to get the technique down, or do them with someone that knows the movement better. Where I train, it seems that no one knows what a real good morning is or even performs them.

Patz: I used to do pistol squats on ice skates while skating from one end of the rink to the other. I have pretty decent balance.
