The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

when I was front squatting eariler this week I saw someone post up in the rack next to me and start front squatting. It was so awesome. He was doing 5s, worked up to 225.. Form was spot on, depth was solid.. we got to talking and he told me that he was originally going to stop at 185, but as I loaded more and more weight on (I was only doing heavy singles) it made him push harder.

anyways, just a fun front squat story. I was truely impressed seeing someone else at my gym front squatting. Made me feel all happy inside, hahaha..

On volume: For those that follow this journal, does it seem like I am doing too much volume? How can I change my volume up for powerlifting? Are there things I need to consider doing/changing? If so, what?

I think your volume is good, however, if you're looking to increase just pay attention to your recovery. Look at my log, I have 2 major lifts plus 2-3 accessories plus 1 or 2 core (core is only done every other day or so).. so we're about the same there. I train 3 days a week and throw 2-3 days a week. If I were just PL training and not throwing, I would go with a 4th day and have a solid WS routine.

take a look at Lones Green's log, that man has some serious volume. Also Travis Bell has pretty high volume. It all depends on your recovery. Start slow and work your way up with regards to volume. So long as you are getting the calories and rest, you can handle a lot more.

You are really the only person who can answer that but you a progressing so thats what counts.

To me I think you should mix it up, higher volume days and lower volume days.

When going for a lower volume day I like to hit the main lift then pick a movement like back raises or hamsting curls and smash it with a fair amount of volume..........then leave (overall volume pretty low).

Best thing you can do at this stage is experiment and remain spontaneous, can't go wrong either way imo - you will no doubt be making further strides regardless.

Whoah! Great work as always man.

On volume, what's worked for me is having a volume day near the start of the week and a low volume, higher intensity day towards the end of the week. That way it feels like the volume work is setting me up for the PRs on Friday/Saturday.

You seem to be doing fine the way you're doing it though.

ahhh bonus reps are the best! That's how my 405x2 went only planned for 1 rep then got a bonus rep in!

Solid pull! I'd like to see you hit 500lbs from the floor. Are you doing speed work for deads?

JC: Thanks. I suppose I just need to read the Westside Book of Methods and just learn more.

Thomas: I don't do speed work for deads...with my current programming, I really don't know how to work it in to my training tbh. At the moment my set up is... Monday ME dead (or variant) + accessory, Tuesday Bench variant + accessory, Thursday ME squat (or variant) + accessory, Friday ME bench + accessory. Only time I do any speed work is when I DE squat after my ME squat on Thursdays. Only time I do any speed work for deadlifts are when I pull with short bands...but I eventually work up to a ME pull.

a lot of guys will alternate their ME squat and dead. That's what I do. I do my DE squat and DE deadlift the same day. Then I ME squat variant week one, ME deadlift variant week 2, etc..

Nice job on the PR and solid floor pressing.

Do you actually lay on the floor for floor press? I guess it's sort-of like a multi board press. I just did it in the beginning because I had no bench..lol
